Taking non-resident ccw courses (Utah and FL) in IL, questions...
Hi everyone,
I'm taking both the non-resident Utah and FL CCW courses the first week of June at my LGS. I live in IL (Cook County - suburbs) and have a couple of questions.
From my understanding that the Utah course is strictly classroom and once complete the company performing the couse will provide all needed paperwork, fingerprints, and mail the application to UT with my check payment. I believe that's all that they stated.
For FL, there is classroom and live fire after the classroom portion is finished. Now here is where I'm confused, the LGS stated that I had to go to FL Dept of Agriculture's website and download the application and request the fingerprint card. I did that and downloaded the:
* Concealed Weapon or Firearms License Application
* Pamphelt (How to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon/firearm.
* List of reciprocity states
I then made the request via their site to mail me the fingerpirnt card. Do I have to mail all this info to the state of FL or does the LGS do that? I doubt the fingerprint card will arrive by the time of my class.
Can someone shed some light on this? Any other IL shooters out there that took these courses? I'm taking the class at Article II range in Lombard, IL. Thanks
JP

Are you paying for two classes?
You should be the one to send in the paperwork. I did for my FL license.
If you take a FL CCW class, look at Utah's website. You may only need the certificate that you'll get from taking the FL class to get your Utah CCW. Or the Utah class certificate for the FL license.

I agree with vaderdaman... Fla is only paperwork. Go on Fla's website and request a packet

I paid for a CCW class that handed me a FL CCW packet to fill out and send in myself. If I remember right it cost $150 for the class. Found out later that the certificate I got from taking a pistol introduction class that my local sheriff's office put on would work just as well. That class was also free.
Not really sure on the Utah class. I've seen them but not taken one. The way the website that I linked reads. The paperwork has to be turned in, in person.
Anyone else reading it that way?

You need to go to the local PD or sheriff's office to do the prints. My sheriff charged $10 per card.

Generally in my area the Utah class is a extra class and extra fee. Seem to me the Fla class on top of being just paper work and the Fla fee covers more states than Utah. Maybe some instructors use the Utah class to make more money?

The reason there are both is the difference in reciprocity.
States that honor a FL non-resident (32): Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming
States that honor UT non-resident (31): Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming
Differences are bolded.
How the classes are setup are completely up to the people that are putting them on. With both, you get 34 states. In my opinion, and the way that I will be running my classes, is I will provide all of my students with the necessary paperwork for whatever I'm teaching. All of the forms are free, so why not? However, again, this is totally up to those running the class. I wouldn't however, send in their paperwork for them.
Vaderdaman - I don't know where you're getting that you have to turn your paperwork in in person. To be a Utah certified instructor, you have to do your training in Utah (with a couple exceptions). Other than that, there's no stipulation that you have to do anything else in person.

Thanks again everyone for chiming into my post.
Thetravelor - Just to confirm, for my prints I can contact my local PD and they will do the prints for me? Is there a certain amount of prints needed for the FL CCW?
To be honest, I've never even been into my local PD so will they be alarmed with this request? Is it a common request?
Thanks
