Heads Up, Colorado! ... New Mexico is trying to mess with reciprocity.

Fellow Patriot
I wanted to let you know of some potential reciprocity changes between Colorado and New Mexico.

A final decision has not been made, but the New Mexico Department of Public Safety is auditing their reciprocity agreements with other states, much the way Wyoming did several years ago.

New Mexico doesn’t like Colorado’s permit since Colorado’s concealed handgun permit is not issued by the state but by a sheriff (something we insisted upon, since it keeps lists decentralized) and doesn’t require live-fire training (we’d remove all training requirements if we had the votes, since government-mandated training isn’t making anyone safer).

Remember: Seeking reciprocity with every state is a dangerous game, since the more restrictive states will demand that Colorado change it’s laws to become much more restrictive.

You can read more about what is happening at the New Mexico DPS site.

I just wanted to give you a heads up that something may be changing about your CCW reciprocity in New Mexico.

I will keep you posted when I hear more about this decision.

Apparently they are trying to pull the plug on MANY reciprocity states!

I saw something about this late last week. Ohio just got reciprocity with New Mexico a few months ago and now it's gone. This is New Mexico's summary of DISqualifications for reciprocity, taken from the DPS website referenced above:
  1. Permits issued locally rather than by the state;
  2. No fingerprint-based background check;
  3. Permits issued to persons under 21 years of age;
  4. Permits issued to resident aliens;
  5. No classroom (static) training required;
  6. No live-fire (dynamic) training required.
Ohio issues through the county sheriff who conducts the background investigations per requirements of the legislature and the Attorney General of Ohio, so we fail #1. However we pass 2-6. This is asinine that NM would make those requirements. I'm pretty sure that most other states issue CHL's through the county.

I guess you can now count NM as part of the Left Coast and New England.

Although we may be doing some dumb stuff with Concealed carry laws. We have counties in NM that it is still a law that every house MUST own a fire arm..we are an open carry state, and also protected by the Castle Doctrine. We can carry concealed in our cars with no permit, the car is an extension of our homes.
Im pretty sure that is far from left cost laws.

MI got nailed with the county conceal license.

Sad part, we were so close to getting it issued by the state, and the secretary of state said they couldn't manage it... WTF?

Then we were so close to getting it out of the hands of the county clerks hands and the constitutional carry org raised holy hell, and shortly after that the sheriff's association objected... apparently because they wanted more money.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

Yeah, New Mexico is an awesome state, but why are they being petty jerks when it comes to out of state holders of conceal carry permits?

They're just going to hurt tourism by denying gun rights to conceal carry permit holders from other states? Particularly states that border NM. A lot of people like to drive down from the front range and Denver for the weekend and holidays. A good number of them have conceal carry permits and will stop heading that way.

It will work both ways if this goes down. Their permit will not be in effect in Colorado if they do this.

Wisconsin passes #1, #3 and #5, but fails all the rest. No biggie, don't go to NM anyway.
