Don't

reload your self defense ammo. Use off the shelf ammo and keep a round from every box you load for potential ballistics testing should you be involved in a trial.

One in the chamber sometimes seems uncertain and complicated. Choose a way for you and stay with it. I keep one in the chamber.

Always carry to practise the conceal. There are a multitude of situations that only experience reveals and practise your draw in them, if even a few times each time. It is said it takes 10,000 repetitions to make anything automatic.

Watch what you wear and say, and post on blogs, social media, and your car. Extremism, vigilantism, or death wish can all be construed from your language, dress, and behavior with guns and used against you in court.

As a policy, don't tell friends, family, or acquaintances. Share this only with those who share your personal privacy and will see that you carry when you undress. Avoid even this with those you are unwilling to trust .

Do not talk without the presence of an attorney after a shooting except to call for an ambulance and declare who you are and that you feared for your life. Do not tell the story of what happened. You will not get it correct, and it will be used against you.

Have a secure and concealed safe box installed in your car accessible from your position in the driver's seat. Honor and respect others rights to not have your CCW on their premises if they post. It's a two way street. Don't ask, don't tell.

Join the NRA, and let them do the heavy lifting. Keep a low personal profile on gun rights. Monitor your local state CCW blog for current issues and current places that are posted.

Don't drink to excess or use drugs. Don't drink and drive, and the list goes on....

Your question was pretty broad

I was not trying to belittle you or make you look as if you were completely dumb with firearms

I gave my guidelines, just like you asked
This is the CCW Talk forum, not the rules of firearms forum..

Always treat every weapon as a loaded weapon

Never point a weapon at anything you dont want to destroy

Keep booger finger off of trigger until you are ready to shoot
On another note, there are 4 basic firearm rules, not three..

1. Assume every gun to be loaded.
Consider any firearm you have not just unloaded to be loaded and treat it accordingly.

2. Control the muzzle–point guns in a safe direction.
You must decide what the safest available muzzle direction is and keep your firearm pointed in that direction.
Never point a firearm at yourself or others.

3. Trigger Finger–keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
The natural instinct when picking up a firearm is to put your finger in the trigger guard.
DON'T! This could cause an accidental discharge if the gun is loaded.

4. Target–be sure of your target and beyond.
Never point your firearm at something you do not intend to shoot.
Make sure you positively identify what you are shooting at and know what lies in front of and beyond it.
Do not use telescopic sights as a substitute for binoculars when identifying persons, animals or objects.

Have a plan for the aftermath of a sd shoot should the need arise, hopefully it never will but you must plan ahead. Look up possible lawyers, know what your gonna do and say or not say. Also checkout Armed Citizens' Legal Defense Network, Inc., see what you think. Know all the laws of the areas you may ever need to carry in. If your not prepared to use it, dont bother to carry it. Make sure to always keep it well hidden, or try to at least, there are sites with good tips to teach you to help conceal in most situations.

Welcome to the forum Sir..

Situation awareness, is my biggest issue.
Walking thru a parking lot, pumping gas, fending off the freeloaders etc...
But that should be a priority whether you are carrying or not.
Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

My wife rolls her eyes at my need to sit facing the entrance at a restaurant or what have you.
But a few times in the last several years she has been know to whisper "you have your gun right?" when she sees a suspicious character.
My answer is always "Yes"..........

Shooting someone (or even drawing) should be the absolute last available option.
Even if you are involved in a good shooting and you are cleared, it can still cost a lot of money in attorney's fees.

When I have more funds, I plan to put an attorney on a retainer in case I need him.
But I do live in Dallas and feel a bit more at risk than in rural parts of my state.

Ive always had a healthy paranoia, situational awareness but when i carry its just an extra reminder to pay attention. Its also a reminder to stay out of confrontation because i need to worry about weapon retention and concealment so its just a good reason to stay out of trouble.

I would not do that.

You will have plenty of time to get an attorney when you need one. Especially if you already have one for your personal needs, i,e, estate planning, etc. If he is not the one, he can refer one to you if it is ever needed.

If it is ever discovered, and it will most likely be you who says it or your wife or someone who heard you say it and you have now posted it on a public blog, that you prepared yourself for such a situation it will be used against you in court. You will painted as a ticking time bomb looking for an excuse to use your gun, i.e. "He even had a defense attorney on retainer for this day!" May not win the day for the opposing counsul, but it will not help.

This applies to any of your "special" habits becoming common knowledge among your friends and acquaintances. An attorney hires someone to snope around for a few days stiking up conversations with your friends, and soon something you would never expect floats to the top, i.e "I knew something like this would happen to him, he is always..."

It is to your advantage to be as normal as you can be, and anything you do is for another reason.
