1 in the chamber. IMO if one is not in the chamber then all you really have is an expensive substandard hammer. I will admit i was a bit nervous at first so I left a snap cap in the pipe for 2 weeks. after the two weeks I checked out my firearm. needless to say it IS always chambered with a round (unless servicing)

Maybe I'm just old school, but I was taught to always treat all guns as if they are loaded, and ready to fire.

That's the way I've treated them. Any other situation just means you've got an expensive paper weight.

There are special situations. Cleaning, dry-firing, handing it to another person. Then you need to clear the gun, clear it again, and then treat it special, because it is in its un-natural state.

Foe me, an unloaded gun is potentially much more dangerous than a loaded gun.

That's not old school, that's the standard practice that all owners of guns should adhere to. We can't be complacent with how we treat our guns. We should always remember the firearms safety rules

Just so we're clear, 1911 readiness conditions do not apply to XD's/glocks/etc and have limited application to few other handguns. But I get what you're saying, and I'm not going to be a dick about semantics like many people often are here. (OMG mags not clips! lol)

Anyway, I as well carry "one in the chamber". With my XDsc, I do not at any point feel unsafe.

It is impossible for an XD to go off at any time that you do not explicitly want it to. If you are too inexperienced that you worry about ND (accidentally sticking your finger in the trigger guard when removing from holster, etc) then you should not be carrying at all.

Been carrying for 13 years. Every gun I have carried (USPc, 1911, Glock, P11, XDm, 642) has been carried fully loaded with a round in the chamber. The HK I carried decocked with the safety on, the 1911 I carry cocked and locked. The others have/had no manual safety or decock.

The way I look at it, you never know what situation may arise that causes you to need to draw your weapon. Having to go the extra step of racking the slide could potentially be the difference between life and death.

I'm perfectly comfortable carrying this way and none of my guns have ever spontaneously gone off on their own while on my hip.

+1 ive carried condition 1 since i got my permit. only time its not is when it needs its weekly maintenance. at night my 870 and glock are also condition 1. when they go in the safe they are all cleared but mags are left full and on the upper shelf (except the AR).

All of the guns in my safe have fully loaded loaded mags, but I leave the chambers empty. If I've got time to get in the safe then I should have time to pump, rack or charge as need be.
