We don't need to get into God made the devil...or God's angels rebelled against him...or God made man and eve and they were not perfect so he punished them (vengeful God? Perfect? Forgiving?)

Religion is also one of the first things to go in a theocracy. Christians would be less free in a pseudo-Christian theocracy than they are currently in America. My point is that it's not so black-and-white an issue. There are problems with both too much and too little religion in government.

Had Christ been against weapons for self-defense then Peter would NOT have been carrying his weapon.

Christ's teachings on self-defense are not as clear cut as that. Self-defense can easily be confused with self-reliance, which is a threat to reliance on God. Relying on your own strength for protection, rather than relying on God, is identical to relying on your own wealth for sustenance, rather than relying on God to provide. Note that Christ also told Peter to put up his weapon, and healed the guard. Similarly, when Christ told his apostles to buy swords, they said "See, Lord, here are two swords", and Christ responded "That's enough." Two swords for twelve apostles? Hardly a clear argument for well-armed self-defense.

I don't think that the GOP is in the best interests of the country right now. Specifically, over the last two election cycles they've promised fiscal responsibility and reform, and after being elected, they focus on social issues. They're doing it right now, with the focus on abortion. In the face of a serious economic crisis, they don't have the courage to stand up and deal with it, and instead, they pander to the extreme religious side of the base. So no. I refuse to vote for the GOP this election, because I do not believe that they will address the issues that matter.

I don't like this cop-out. "If those people aren't doing X, Y, Z, then they aren't true Christians!" Well, God didn't establish a baseline set of acts for being a true Christian or not. All he asked for was faith. So if I have faith I am a true Christian, regardless of whether I sin, and regardless of whether I am correctly interpreting the Bible.

People have done terrible things in the name of God. That does not change the message of Christ, but it does mean that we have to take responsibility, as Christians, for their behavior. We are in fact called to reprove our brethren who stray.

I think the kindest people are often the most ignorant. Intelligence and knowledge tends to make people selfish, and superior, and they rely on their own knowledge rather than God's wisdom. Just my two cents.
