Carrying with family visiting

My family is visiting from illinois friday, my family is by no means anti gun my dad owns several himself. But they are not big on the whole "concealed carry thing" as my mom and dad put it, and when I told my sister that I have my carry permit she was like "oh, cool" but when she found out i carry all day everyday she asked why? then said isn't the point to be able to carry, and be used as a deterant, not to carry all the time. (BTW yes i tried to explain why I carry but it doesn't seem to get though) I know it will be out of sight out of mind but like when my mom gives me a hug she will know its there. When i pick up my 4 yr old nephew he will ask "what is that?" BTW with my nephew here all firearms will be unloaded and locked up, if it is not on my person. I know this is only a answer I can come up with but I just figured it couldn't hurt to ask you all what you think.

Maybe it's just me, but the gun would stay in the cabinet until family left.

My nephew just noticed my pistol for the first time the last time I visited. I have worn every time I have ever been around him. My mom hardly ever realizes its there but she knows I always carry. Your family should support you because you are their family.

I say what better reason could there be to be able to protect those that matter to you most?

I don't have my permit yet so take it for what it's worth, but I'm of the opinion that if they are visiting me, it doesn't matter how they view it since they are at my home. They can not like it (lord knows my mother hates that I am getting the permit) all they want, but it's my place so my rules. As far as the kids go, +1 for keeping them unloaded and locked, but I would probably still keep my pistol on me (loaded and chambered).

My 2 cents...

I agree with Knightslugger. You should definitely carry. There are ways to get around people noticing. Like when you hug people, if you carry on your right side, hug with your right arm lower, so the other person has to hug you with their left arm high, so they aren't even close to feeling your firearm. It will take some time to get used to, but it's worth it.

You should carry all the time. If someone says something, then explain and teach them. Explain that you've gone through the proper training and you practice shooting.

I hope everything works out

I open-carry most of the time, but in my home I ALWAYS open carry. I'm not putting my safety or comfort aside for someone else's misplaced fear of an inanimate object.

id still carry. if theyre curious as to why you ALWAYS carry ask them why they ALWAYS have a spare tire in their trunk. it may be heavy and take up space but you never know if/when youre gonna need it. they may not like it but theyll get used to it. also- the hug arm positioning trick works, i use it all the time.

I dunno, guess my family lives back off the road with gate/fence so things are bit different. Honestly, I can't see having my pistol on me laying in the floor playing ship with my nephew. I do agree with everyone else about explaining it thoroughly with the family, then again, I grew up with a shotgun by the front door.
