I carry the .40, same size frame, in a cbst at 4-4:30. The back clip, the one under the grip, sits against the left side of the back belt loop on my jeans.
Wear it in everywhere. It conceals very well, MrsE has done extensive studying.
The only issue is that every once in a while, I'll knock the grip against the back of a booth in a restaurant. It's a solid noise, I just act like nothing happened.

I can agree with that, but he is talking about concealing for defensive purpose. I don't care what they say, but I can conceal a short gripped pistol a whole lot easier than a full size grip.
Not intending to argue, but I'm just the type that will use the right tool for the right job. Want a 4.5 + tactical/competitive pistol, am looking for capacity and that sight radius. Want to "hide" it, expecting to thwart a BG at 10', then go with a chopped down version.
But on the other hand, am ALL for whom ever doing whatever they please to customize what they have.

I don't consider it arguing. The right tool for the right job is the right attitude. I carry a full size XDm 9 because for me it's the right tool. However I don't have to wear a tucked in shirt or dress cloths for work either. If I were required to dress up I would have a heck of a time concealing my full size. Everyone of us has different needs and therefore different requirements. That's why there are so many different models of guns and holsters.

I just wore my 4.5 -40 with this from "old faithful Holster" company. It's a kit I put together for under $40 in horsehide. About 4:30 position.

I'm feelin' ya Tex. Pickin' up what you're layin' down...and I agree; however, I got the compact IOT be able to conceal. The grip length impacts concealability a lot more than barrel length. I got it 5" because I want to be able to shoot really tight groups on the range. I got XD because its ergonomics make it the most accurate pistol for me when it comes to point shooting.
At 10' I can point-and-shoot and hit a soda can; so, no sights required for close-in SD situations.

I conceal my XDm.40 4.5" daily with no problems. I also concealed my XD.45 5" before that. The belief that you can only CC a "compact" of some kind is misguided.

Last year I bought a 4.5 and just last month a compact, both 9mm XDm's. For me the compact is much more comfortable to carry and easier to conceal IWB because of the shorter grip. I can hide the longer grip and barrel ok but they both dig into me a lot more when sitting, squatting, bending, etc.
If I had it to do over I would have just bought the compact. I do not seem to shoot much better or worse with one or the other. Having both is fine though, the 4.5 now does house duty with a light attached to it and the compact is what I carry.

I'm 5'9 145lbs and carry a 4.5 with CBST all day long. Never get busted. Is it the most comfortable firearm to carry? No, but I don't see how a grip chop would make it any easier

after trying several, i found the n82tactical regular iwb holster to be the most comfortable conceal carry for the xdm 9mm 4.5" -- nothing came close
