@ Shredder---I was also thinking about taking the online class, but the more people I talked to about it said to take the hands on class. So I will be taking the class this coming weekend here in MN.

The NRA just yesterday ordered all of their instructors to disassociate themselves and their credentials from any online firearms training....

Its about time.

I did. vaguntraining.com

I am not saying that I learned about guns or recieved any valuable gun training through this very quick and inexpensive online "class". The whole process took under 45 minutes and it only costs $29.95.
I have been shooting with friends for years that have taught me about guns and how to safely handle and operate a firearm. Those friernds consist of former LEO, security specialists, hunters, etc. I did not feel that paying more and spending more time in a classroom would benefit me so I opted for the online route.
Unless the class actually includes range time, I would question just how much one can learn about gun safety and shooting.

I would like to pose a question to those of you against CCW online courses. Since a class or permit is not required for open carry, in states that allow it, is it the concealment part you have a problem with or people not knowing how to safely handle and operate the firearm they are carrying?

It's not that at all. I am not at all for a "test" for a Constitutional Right.

I guess my thing is, extra training never hurts when it comes to something that can be deadly.

Add to that the fact that CCW is far more "popular" so to speak than OC - and you get more wannabes that think they are police officers, dirty harry, etc., when it comes to your CHL candidates.

Obviously it's a small percentage but I just don't think a bit of training both from the safety and the legal stand point are bad things....

Did I need a class when I went for my CHL? No. I could have taught the darn thing.

I guess the way I teach my classes - I do so with the hope that even the most experienced shooter takes something away from it - something that not every instructor does....

Again, I teach college level and graduate level courses both in person and in line and I can clearly tell the difference in the quality education the two different categories are getting. Doesn't mean either of us try any less for the online thing, it just doesn't translate as well.

and for fun, here is the NRA e-mail...

Quote:
Dear NRA Instructors and Training Counselors:
Due to NRA's long history of facilitating quality firearm training, the public expects a high standard for training programs bearing the NRA name. Maintaining the high quality of the training programs is of the upmost importance.
The National Rifle Association of America currently has no online firearm training courses. All of our firearm training courses (Home Firearm Safety excluded) have a shooting component on a range. Some NRA certified instructors have created online firearm training programs, and have issued certificates to individuals that take their courses, using the title NRA Certified Instructor. Under no circumstances may NRA's name or your NRA credentials be associated with any online firearms training course. If NRA's name or your NRA credentials are associated with a course, you must, among other things, actually work with the students, face-to-face, to allow you to evaluate whether they perform the safe operation of a firearm, and shoot with a sufficient level of skill. This policy applies to any course which might result in issuing any certificate that bears the title of NRA Certified Instructor, or if the course is associated in any way whatsoever with a certification issued by the NRA.
While NRA allows NRA Certified Instructors to use their titles in association with courses that are not NRA courses, as long as they make a very clear disclaimer that such courses are not NRA approved, the use of a disclaimer is not sufficient to allow you to use NRA's name or your NRA credentials in connection with an online course. In other words, your NRA credentials and the NRA's name, trademarks, titles identification numbers, etc. may not be associated with any online firearm training course, regardless of whether there is a statement that it is not an NRA course.
We have even found online courses with titles such as: "NRA CCW Course,"NRA Home Defense," and so on, that are not NRA sanctioned courses. NRA Instructors are not authorized to create a title of a course which includes "NRA," "National Rifle Association," or any other wording that makes a non-NRA course appear to be an NRA course.
Violation of these policies may result in revocation of your NRA credentials. If you have any questions concerning this policy, please contact the NRA Training Department.
Yours Truly,

Charles H. Mitchell
Manager, NRA Training Department.

Here in VA. you can get your CC permit without firing a round or demostrating any knowledge of a handgun at all. A hunter safety course will satisfy our requirements. Good idea or bad idea ? The law on conceal carry , from what i understand was intended to allow any legal owner to CC , but to get votes they added the minimal class requirements.

I took a online course. Couldn't find anyone that offered the coures nearby or even one farther away that had a opening in a reasonable time frame. I have been shooting for over 30 yrs and gave myself the education on the laws independtly(talked to lawyers, judges and LE i knew). Also in VA. the VCDL answered a few questions for me.

The online course is what it is , the minimal requirement, You should educate yourself on the other aspects on your own if you go this route.

As for the NRA stance on this, it is to be expected. Big business always trys to control the market. In Va. you don't have to be a NRA instructor, just state certified.

You don't have to be an NRA instructor in Ohio either. Tis just one of the avenues of becoming an instructor.

Again, not disputing everything you are saying. I think every state is different as is every individual.

The problem with rights would be that with every right comes a responsibility and sadly, some people need reminded of what those responsibilities are....otherwise said rights get abused and make the rest of us normal people look bad
