After seeing a bunch of news stories about home invaisons, I started carrying concealed around the house. My wife never noticed for a couple of months until I was repairing something and my shirt rode up. She got all over my case about wearing a gun in the house. I showed her the news stories and now she keeps quiet.

I'm 10" taller than my wife, and she is a hugger. She finds out quickly. I carry open around the house now. I'm teaching my kids about firearms safety, and I don't want any stigma associated with guns.
FWIW, I open carry about 40% of he time in public, and in 3 years I can count the number of people who even noticed it on one hand. I had one woman get a little batty with a whole "think of he children" speech. After her 10 minute breathless rant I explained to her I was ready and willing to put my life on he line with my firearm to save mine or anyone else's children. I also explained that if an attacker charged in the door, and started shooting that I would do everything in my power to stop him before anyone was injured. My wife explained how our kids already know how to take cover, and check for exits. I doubt it changed her outlook, but she was certainly flabbergasted when we finished.

Hugs are tricky.
I made the mistake of going for the "over" hug once, and letting the other person grab my waist. The expression on her face was enough to teach me a very valuable lesson that day -- if someone can touch you, someone can touch your gun.
I always go for the "under" hugs now.
For guys, who typically do the half-and-half hug (one arm over, one arm under), I always dip my gun-side and force the other person to grab over my shoulder on that side.
For girls, it's a little less awkward to have them grab around my neck, so I let 'em. But I set up the hug so that they can't get under my arms; I hold both elbows in and extend palms out so they know to go over my shoulders.
Haven't had a problem since; I was just lucky that my friend that day already knew that I carry and that I'm a firearms enthusiast. Could've been worse.

I'll contact Magpul Dynamics and let them know we've uncovered a market for a new instructional DVD:
Quote:
The Art of the Dynamic Hug is a 4-disc DVD set featuring over seven hours of actual live fire class instruction and additional instructional material.
Using a diverse group of beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, instructors Travis Haley and Chris Costa guide the class from the fundamentals of hug operation, to problem solving, and through complex real-life scenarios. This progression from basic to advanced hug manipulation pushes students of all skill levels to their failure points, illustrating how even the best shooters can advance and excel.
Four discs, region free.

You are so right on with this. I have to do this also, because most people I know are not aware that I carry.

Most of the time I carry my XDM .45 in a Smart Carry Concealed holster. When using that holster NO ONE notices that I am carrying, not even my GF. I kinda like the looks on people's faces when I carry open.

I carry a Full size tactical and my family didn't notice until I told them. this was brought on during an 8 hour car ride and the radio had something on it about Carrying and the step mom went off about how bad it was and that "everyone would notice!" I laughed and asked if she "noticed" my holstered gun and started pointing out the many safety advantages of carrrying and showed where my holstered gun was being worn. Then my girlfriend took 2 months to figure it out and well she should have noticed well before that...

Speaking of taking away any stigma from guns - gun owners need hugs too!
