Question about Iowa ccw?
Hey everyone. I have a question about Iowa's ccw permit. I have been doing a ton of searching but I haven't really found a straight answer. I take my class next week and was wondering this: If you have an OWI first offense will that stop you from getting a permit. I got one 11 years ago coming home from a party. I know I shouldnt have been driving but I was only 21 and well you know how that goes. Is that serious enough to be denied a permit?
Thanks

I see that Iowa is a Shall-Issue state, although after reading the requirements at http://www.legis.state.ia.us/Rules/C.../6614/6614.pdf it seems more like a May-Issue state to me.
Quote:
4.4(2) The sheriff may use discretion in determining whether or not to issue the permit. Prior to
issuing the permit, the sheriff shall determine that the applicant is not a convicted felon by obtaining
criminal history data through the I.O.W.A. system from the department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The permit shall be issued on Form WP1, WP2, WP7 or WP9 and the sheriff may restrict
or limit the authority granted by permits issued on Form WP1 or WP2.

I do not see that a OWI will prevent you, but when the sheriff can restrict, you can never know what reasons they can give. I would believe your go-to-go.
I am not a Iowa resident, so I really don't know, but IMO you should be fine.
Good Luck

Looking at the application form, you should be OK.

There is no "Common Sense Gun Regulation". There is only unconstitutional gun restriction.
I carry always not because I go places trouble is likely, but because trouble has a habit of not staying in its assigned zone.

Now the question... will Iowa honor Minnesota's permit so we can play nice? Our wicked witches to the east need to hop on the wagon.
I still can't believe Wisconsin of all states is so against it.
Sorry to ramble off topic.
Good luck!

to quickly answer the OP question, per IA DPS:
3. Addiction to the use of alcohol may be indicated by any of the following:
a. voluntary or involuntary committal to any in-patient alcohol treatment program in the past three years
b. Two or more arrests, one of which resulted in a conviction, for unlawful use or possession of alcohol or other criminal act committed while under the influence of alcohol in the past year
c three or more arrests, one of which resulted in a conviction, for unlawful use or possession of alcohol or other criminal act committed while under the influence of alcohol in the past five years if the most recent arrest occurred in the past year
d. disciplinary action taken by any employer or organization for unlawful use or possession of alcohol or alcohol rehabilitation failure in the past year.

Iowa honors all valid permits, issued by any state, that is carried by non-residents of Iowa. MN does not honor IA's permit.
come visit Iowa Firearms Coalition and look around. We were previously called Iowa Carry, and worked very hard to get the carry laws changed.
We have a strong political presence and there are several bills currently going through the legislative process this session that need our support.

Sec. Swanson is quite political but she has been on top of getting recipricol taken care of. Give her time, it has only been a month. It would follow logic to have it done ahead of time but that is not how government works.
