We pretty much see eye2eye on most things, so ... I hope you're not mad at me
Nope not mad.

Like others have said, if you need a defensive weapon you might not have time to rack a round. However, don't carry condition one until you are completely comfortable with doing so. Until you are that comfortable you are more likely to hurt yourself than be attacked. Train, train, and then train again...then carry with one in the tube ready to go.

This is something I struggle with. I think it's kinda pointless to carry a gun that's not ready to go, but more often than not I'm carrying a Glock and I've heard a lot of instances where a shirt gets caught up in the trigger causing an accidental discharge. With an XD or XDm leaving the thumb on the striker indicator automatically negates that instance. Maybe I should carry my xdm more often

You can mitigate that almost completely buy using a good holster and training.

At first I was spoiled by the thumb safety on my PX4 Storm. It took me some time to get used to carrying one in the chamber on my XDm but as you get used to working your muscle memory it really changes everything.

Now to me if you're not locked and loaded, you might as well not be carrying.

An unloaded gun is a paperweight. The XD and XD(M) was designed to be safely carried while chambered.

I never load my pistol without leaving one in the pipe. It makes no difference whether it's going into my CC holster or my nightstand.
