I carry everyday and everywhere it's legal with one in the chamber. I struggled with this same issue too when I first started carrying.
One of my really good friends who has carried for years said to me, "you're going to die if you don't have one in the chamber, because I promise you, if someone comes after you with a gun or even a knife and you don't have one racked, they will kill you before you finish pulling back the slide."
After hearing that I racked my gun immediately and put it back in my holster. I recommend you do the same.

My 2 cents again
This is potentially dangerous, so like sky diving, or swimming, or anything that can be dangerous, do not let anyone bully you into doing something until you feel comfortable. You make the decision when you are ready.

Not being sarcastic but I just dont understand the concept of not carrying one in the chamber. If you are that nervous about it you probably shouldnt carry a gun at all. Stick with a knife unless you are worried about it accidently opening in your pocket.

My brother used to do that, thought it was a safe way to carry. Then I told him how under stress you may forget you aren't ready to go or the simple fact, you may not have enough time to load...he now does what I do, one in the pipe, always.

You could always use the comparison...
When you are driving..do you think you would be able to react fast enough in a crash to buckle your seatbelt...
I mean its a proven fact..your body will tense, your adrenaline will kick in, your eyes will focus directly in front...your fine motor skills go to crap...then try to think "ok rack the slide before this guy gets to me and slices my head off"
