One In Chamber Question

Okay this is probably the dumbest question you will read on the forums today, but how safe are the trigger and grip safeties on XDs. I just got my LTCF and plan on carrying my XD9 on occasion. I understand you are supposed to keep a bullet in the chamber so if there is a situation where you need to draw, you will be able to fire, but I just feel a little unnerved about having a firearm that is ready to fire in my pants.

So, I guess my question really is: Is it impossible for an XD to fire if both the trigger and grip safeties aren't depressed at the same time? As in, there is no possible way something in the firing pin mechanism could fail and cause the weapon to discharge on its own? Otherwise I was considering just carrying without a round chambered.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's completely safe. If you feel uneasy about it, cock the pistol as if there was a round in there and carry it around for a week or so. You'll see it will be in the same condition every time you check it. It's perfectly safe.

There is NO POSSIBLE way that your weapon will fire if both safety mechanisms are not activated and the trigger is being pulled. Try it for yourself unloaded. pull the trigger without depressing a safety...pull the trigger pressing one safety...drop your gun on a hard floor...no click.

+1. Doing this really seems to help people that are new to carrying.

What part of PGH are you from? I'm near Cranberry. Where do you go shooting at?

I would say you'd have a better chance of winning over and over again at Rivers Casino downtown than having the gun accidentally discharge. I mean I guess stranger things have happened but I would think it would be a 1 in a billion type of thing. The grip safety was the selling point for me over a Glock. I would have been afraid of pulling a plaxico burress with a glock...

I have carried my XD54C for 3 years with 1 in the chamber and full mag. I have never had an accidental discharge or a negilent discharge and feel 100% safe with the gun always loaded.
I would have second thoughts if I were carring a glock though.

Haha silly Plaxico Burress. I'm from North Hills. When I'm home I shoot at the State Game Lands in Wexford, since it's free. Right now I am in State College, PA finishing up my final semester of college, but I plan on joining the gun club in Millville once I move back to Pittsburgh for good in about a month. It's really close to my house.

I just picked up my LTCF (ccw permit for you non-Pa's) on Monday. Carried +1 for the first time last nite while I went to the grocery store. No issues. Forgot about it, in fact.

Give it a try yourself. Try dry-firing without either safety engaged. The gun won't fire.
