When a free, proper aged, qualified, investigated (IE: CHP) citizen is denied their right to defend themselves because of how it would make someone feel "uncomfortable"?
Dead is uncomfortable as well, and with the increase of on-campus violence, I think eventually someone should challenge the legality of an institution accepting public tax dollars on restricting the rights of a person who has committed no crime.
This is ridiculous! How would my behavior change from when I go to the store, or to the movies, or to church, or to work just because I went to a school? It wouldn't. It's bluntly foolish, and assinine.

+1 Amen!

I'd be down for a compromise for a "you must conceal" if given the option with CPZ... that being said I know it's not ideal.
Here's the problem (if you can call it a problem), not enough tragedy has struck people...a tragedy has to happen for people to evaluate laws and various "needs" of the people... VTech had to happen for officials to start evaluating carrying on a college campus...
People will ALWAYS make the ignorant argument that gun restrictions will prevent criminals. "If we ban all weapons then noone will have them!!!!!" no... if you ban all weapons then ONLY the criminals and police will have them. Police are reactionary only. The argument would be, "but if you SAW someone with a weapon then you'd KNOW they were a criminal and you could run away and call the police"... by that logic we could then extend that precautionary action to start stopping "violent looking" individuals, then to a race/religion/creed/eye color/hair color/etc because they are "statistically more likely to commit a crime".
Here's the issue, and we're just as guilty as anyone else... noone's willing to sit down and talk, logically, and realistically understand BOTH sides of the argument, then make restrictions and laws based on that. That's not what happens.
Anyway, enough ranting for me for now

The VCDL discussed this issue with VT BEFORE the tragedy, and they were smug, arrogant, and pretentious about the situation. When forewarned about danger, and you proceed? You will reap the results you sowed.
If you want an example of "wrong thinking", Frank Hargrove who was a REPUBLICAN that represented the most CONSERVATIVE district in VA told me, bluntly, to my face "...when someone goes onto a college campus, their thinking changes, and I just don't trust their judgement." He retired last year.
With good reason.

i haven't read this whole thread but i don't think this has been answered. would there be a difference between a public school and a private university?
*edit* oops answered my own question... Florida Statute 790 says
"For the purposes of this section, "school" means any preschool, elementary school, middle school, junior high school, secondary school, career center, or postsecondary school, whether public or nonpublic."

Rigor, as a former Oregonian I applaud your wish to carry on campus, safe town or not. I went to school in Burbank (northern LA) during the Rodney King Riots. All I had was a Marlin .22 lever action rifle in the trunk of my car. Then I'd store it in the closet of my dorm room. Probably not the most legal approach but people were pretty freaked out down there at the time. A friend carried a Glock 19 in afanny pack and almost everyone knew about it. I soon thereafter bought a SIG 228 and never looked back. I carried that pistol in a soft briefcase, backpack and on my belt. Be careful of the Off-Body carry though. If you forget your book bag in the school cafeteria cuz the chocolate pudding knocked your socks off, bad juju will find you.

Thanks for clarifying that. You are fortunate because even with a CHL we can't carry on university campuses here in Ohio.

G50, thank you! And slugger, I do feel very fortunate to live in the state of Oregon. They have some pretty decent laws about carrying, even if the laws in use of force are not citizen friendly. (For example you can't draw to prevent an attack - only once you're attacked can you draw to stop the attack if and only if you fear for your life.)
And I think off body or ankle would be the way to go. Does anyone ever even use the ankle carry anymore? Being in school, having a bag is only natural for me. I'd be extra vigilant over it if I were to have my piece in there.
Being that I'm a little chunky, my middle tends to protrude a bit over my belt line (I hate to say it! Hopefully it won't for much longer) so I don't think an IWB would be at all comfortable for me in class.
