Busted At The Gun Show! This is a discussion on Busted At The Gun Show! within the CCW Talk forums, part of the Use and Training category; sounds like the reason the OP was required to unload was to protect himself from people like himself
we should thank the gun show people ...

Were you at the Bill Goodmans show in Sharonville?

I don't know about other states, but I'm trying to become and LEO here, and every single department has told me that your not really off duty ever. Your a police officer at all times, when your in plain clothes its not your duty to give speeding tickets, but your suppossed to carry.
And forget all that nonsense about not allowing CCW's into gunshows. If its CCW it stays there unless you need to use it. Period, you want to unload my weapon you don't get my business.

I myself, as a new CCW, but a student of the law at all times, I feel that unless there is a sign, consistent with what the State of Texas says is illegal to carry (which is known as the 30.06 rule), I'm safe to carry my firearm, if it is concealed.
In Texas, we do not have an open carry law (yet). As a result, the gun show I was at three weeks ago, had a sign saying all weapons must be checked. But the purpose of having a CCW/CCP, is that it is concealed. An LEO was at the door to zip-tie the guns, however, like some have posted, if my CCW is meant for that purpose, there is no need to zip-tie it. I'm not there to sell my CCW anyway. If I was, it would be unloaded at home, and a different CCW would be in use. I am never unarmed (unless it is posted I must be).
However, I do understand where some come from that they must be zipped, and that's because you have hayseed dummies coming into the gun show with no idea what a weapon is, handling a firearm inside the gun show with obvious newbieness, and scaring you half to death, even if the firearm is zipped, you still are scared because they do not know half of the firearm safety rules.
And we all know "Do Not Touch" signs don't deter idiots from touching it anyway! Idiots!

Are you trying to say it was okay to do a concealed carry at the gun show you attended? The Texas gun shows I have attended, large and small, have 30.06 signs in addition to signs saying all weapons must be checked, so no concealed carry allowed.

I was at a gunshow where several tables had those signs saying Do Not Handle Without Permission. I would see people picking up rifles or whatever the sellers had and taking a look at them without asking. I would always ask the seller if I could pick up an look at whater they happened to have at the table that caught my eye. Even when the person didn't have one of those sins on their table. In several cases I actually was thanked for asking. And in one the seller was much friendlier and explained about the shotgun I wanted to take a look at.

Let me put my 2 cents in here.....
As an LEO.....I'm never "not a cop". It a 24 hour way of life & way of thinking. When I'm "not on the clock" I can choose when & where I will announce myself as a police officer & enforce a law. Sometimes, I witness shoplifting thefts, & domestic disputes at stores when I'm shopping. I don't interject myself into those situations, (unless it became serious or life threatening...) however, I simply call 911 & do my best to be a great witness for the "on duty" officers. Only 3 times in the past 12 years, have I ever done a "police act" when I was "not on the clock" and it was to assist a fellow officer who was fighting with a person. I carry a firearm everywhere I go when "off the clock". Better to have it & not need it than......well, you know the rest.
When a gun show comes to my city & jurisdiction.....I carry concealed to the show. When the show is in another city, outside my jurisdiction, I don't carry inside the show. Too many possible hassles & problems to deal with, if the officers working the show find out. It's probably the only time, I don't carry concealed......& sometimes I feel guilty about it.
Once you bump into a criminal that you have arrested when your "off the clock" and shopping with your family....& the two of you exchange that knowing eye to eye look at each other........you'll get that sinking feeling if your not armed....because the criminal could care less if your "off-duty". To him/her......your still a cop & they are counting on most cops not being armed when off-duty. I experienced this during my first year on the job & about 15 times since! I live in a small town, so seeing someone you've arrested is pretty common place.

Well on the flip side, I imagine you are opening yourself up to some liability/criminal issues if you are caught again carrying at shows and/or if round(s) were discharged by you at the show. I can see the point of not wanting to relinquish the comfort of a nicely sealed CCW, but at the same time, I've been to enough shows to be grateful that some of the idiots I've seen their have their firearms unloaded and their slides zip-tied back.

SWEET.
I unload at the door. Present my CCL and weapon to the officer, chamber open, puts on the zip tie, then I open carry while looking for more tools. When I exit the building, reload my mag, cut zip tie, load weapon, CC weapon and leave. I go in clean, but allways come out walking the dog.
No way in hell am I gonna get jacked in the parking lot by some POS zombie without a fight. I live in Houston, and the lot trash crawls out from the gutter at gun shows. I honestly believe that not every person at the show even knows which way to point the weapon in a "hostile" situation, so the "cleared and tied" approach bothers me none.
