Yugo Mauser 24/47

I was firing a Yugo mauser 24/47 at the range the other day at distances of 100 and 50 yards with iron sights. It was a bit windy, but not too bad. At 100 yards, I was taking my time on my shots and aiming center at the target and was hitting the target about 4 inches high. All 15 of the shots at 100 yards and in a group of 5" wide and within 2" in height. At 50 yards I hit 8 out of 15 shots within the black of a standard NRA rifle target. I was shooting steel cased,150 grain 8mm Romanian Surplus Ammo from the 1970's. In other words... not very accurate. I know that the ammo is not the best, but should do better than that. I was practing all the fundamentals of marksmanship (breathing, squeezing the trigger, etc.) except I believe that I am not considering at what distance these rifles are sighted. The rear sight was all the way back to the "0" notch. I found some ballistic charts online, but I m not sure if I am using the rear sight properly or if I am not considering at what distance they are sighted at. Perhaps 300 meters? I certainly did alot better with other rifles that day...

Ok, just in case anyone was needing to know... These rifles were sighted in at 300 meters so they will shoot roughly about 8" high at 100 yards. When they were orginally sighted the front sight post was filed down to were it was sighted at 300 meters. A good solution for this is to take off the front sight hood and replace the front sight post. One could be purchased from Brownells for about $15. I would love to be able to shoot at 300 meters, but all the outdoor ranges in south florida have a distance of 100 yards max.

Just replaced the front sight on mine and will have to do a bit of filing on it as it is spot on at 200 yards with the rear sight set on the 700 line. Better than the short front sight it had before. A SKS/AK front sight pusher works great for left and right adjustment after you get it on.
