Lightbulb .17 hmr input

Needing some iput. Im thinking of going with a marlin .17 hmr 22"bullbarrel. An having some thoughts on optics. I wanna stay on the lower price end with this gun. Was thinking of a sweet 17 but wanted to get more input. Planning on 100 yrds as a zero and want to be able to shoot 300. Any opinions and advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Also thinking of the cci ammo over the hornady?

You'll have to shoot your rifle to decide the best ammo. It could be CCI, Hornady, or who knows?

As far as scopes I'm not a fan of the BSA scopes. The Busnell Trophy line are pretty decent scopes in the same price range.

I love my little 17HMR break-open rifle, except for the squib load yesterday that resulted in bullet stuck in bore.

Otherwise very devastating to striped gophers in my lawn out to 150 yards. Beyond that, the wind highly affects it.

I've had a Marlin VSS 17HMR for years and it is an absolute tackdriver. Just for the helluvit I mounted a cheap 4-16x44mm varmint scope on it for around $120 and have had good results so I kept the Nikon I had for another piece.

I do some mid to long distance squirrel hunting with it shooting them in the head at 100+ yards from our deer tower stands as they cross cleared paths. We also do some target shooting and I routinely shoot the thumbtacks holding my competitors target so it will fall away before he gets a good group going.

I haven't tried anything but Hornady ammo because it has been flawless and extremely accurate for me. A couple years ago it shot the primer from spent shotgun shells at 100 yards...3 of them in a row without messing up the rest of the head. So if it ain't broke, don't mess with it. Your gun may prefer other but mine loves Hornady so I stick with it.

I got my son a Marlin 917V and put a Crosspoint 4x16 mil-dot ($70) on it. At 100 yds 3 shots make one ragged hole. Amazing little gun.

Not a lot more for this over the BSA:

Rifleman Rifle Scope 3-9x 40mm Wide Duplex Reticle Matte

Or this which is what I have on my Stevens .223:

Elite 3200 Tactical Rifle Scope 10x 40mm 1/10 Mil Adjustments Mil-Dot Reticle Matte
