The ruger m77 was also a pretty good coyote hunting gun for me, it was my dads. Still like the Howa better but the m77 was no slouch.

I'm going to stray off the path a little here. The OP said that .223/5.56 was an option. I would seriously look at the Mossberg MVP. It is a bolt gun that will shoot the 5.56x45 round. It also accepts the AR15 magazines, plus a varmint stock to boot. They're a little rare right now but that should change soon. Every time I inquire about one the price is around $625. Just a thought.

I've got to admit with such an off-the-wall question that compared apples to oranges to dogs, I am glad that I am receiving as much info/help as I am. Thanks for the responses.

Just reread your OP...if you're looking at the Remington 770, I'd personally want something at least a little higher up. For Remington, a 700, or, as I would choose, beind a Savage fan, something in the Savage Hunter or Package series of Rifles. My 11FCXP3, which is a Savage .308 Hunter from the package series, is a great gun, with the added bonus that it was very easy for me to add a new trigger, and, if/when I decide on a heavier bbl, Savages are made so pretty much anyone with decent skill could swap barrels.

OP....based on your comments, I'm betting you would enjoy a good .308 bolt gun on the outdoor range you mentioned. There is a lot of analyzing that an analytical kind of person can do when determining where aim to put that round on target at a given distance. I wish I had a 1000 yd range 30ish minutes from where I live....I would be there every week.
If you decide to go with a .308 bolt gun, don't miss taking a look at the Savage rifles. For shooting steel at longer ranges, their series 10 models, such as the Savage 10 FCP HS-Precision, give a shooter a great value and very little reason to change anything on it. Add a quality optic and you got everything you need for a long, long time.
Good luck in what ever you decide.

Actually, my second or third post revealed that I linked a different model than I wanted. I want the R700 or a comparable savage model. Or just say screw it and get an AR.
Thanks for the replies guys.

oops...sorry.
If you want a 308, I'd say go for a bolt action, but if you want 5.56 I'd say go for an AR.
Remingtons are great guns, But, being a Savage fan, I have to say I find them awesome, and out of the box accuracy is great...added to that their modability and They are great for making a rifle customized to your preferences.

Get a savage with the accu-trigger in .308 Winchester and put a good glass on it.
Not much else the rifle will need out of the box.
you'll prolly wanna add a few items later like a bipod or tripod depending on the mission. I also find ammo on the butt stock to be handy, but thats because mine has a blind magazine.
