taking the tikka t3 but what caliber

ok im takeing the tikka t3 with nikkon BDC 3x9 40mm, but torn between .308 or 30-06 hmmmm not to sure yet i got a group full or exsperinced hunters telling me both rounds, the 30-06 has the knock down power for anything in north america, and the 308 will get the job done and is accurate, but i really just dont know,

i will be hunting deer, hog, ram, and maybe a Nelgi if you dont know what that is there about the size of a horse no kidding and kinda look like one too. im sure a 308 whould take all of these but a 30-06 may knock em dead on the spot !!

7x57mm Mauser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"W. D. M. Bell, who shot 1,011 elephants using a 7x57mm rifle", a .308 has very similar ballistics and a 30 06 has even more punch but isn't quite as accurate. Unless there is a special drawing for Tyrannosaur tags I think either one will do just fine... If you are concerned that you are not a good enough shot and so think you need more power I suggest a 105 howitzer.

FWIW the .308 has less recoil, is more accurate and is cheaper to shoot as well.

From what you're describing I'd want the extra edge the ol '06 will give you. Plus you can find ammo for it anywhere, and cheap. You won't be sorry.

Some of the benefits of the shorter .308 cartridge is mitigated by the long-action bolt on the Tikka. Tikkas only use one length of bolt and add a bolt stop to accomodate the shorter cartridges like the .308 and 300 WSM. So, you won't get a shorter, lighter action with if your rifle is chambered in .308.

However, the other benefits of a short action cartidges such as the potential improved accuracy, will still be retained.

I have a Tikka in the .270WSM and it remains one of my best all-around hunting rifles. It's light (about 6.5 lbs), accurate (sub-moa past 100yds), short bolt throw (about 70 degrees), super smooth action and the trigger is second none in factory rifles (crisp). They are reasonably priced too.

In 30-06 or .308 a Tikka is a great rifle.

i like the .308 so far its in the lead Hornady has some very nice ballistics for the .308 ammo, i know tikkas have a 1:11 twist barrel i think the 1:11 barrel likes the 165gr-and up anyone know how this barrel twist ratios work

You can never go wrong with .308. Just my opinion, but there it is.

I chose .308 when I made that choice.

Then I also went and bought a 7mm Rem. mag.
