Ok so I was thinking about getting a vest and I have been looking at a simple molle plate carrier that I could personalize with a selection of molle pouches. My question to you guys is which AR mag pouch do you prefer:

1) The open top elastic retained pouch.

2) Or the closed top adjustable velcro style.

I suppose a combo could be used but let me know what you think.

If you are actually going to use the carrier and mag pouches, the open top are better.

Not what you asked but...

FWIW, most plate carriers don't work well without plates. If you're going to use plates, then obviously you can ignore that. If you're not you'll be better served with a chest rig. I really like Eagle for this, and they sell a Molle Chest Rig that works well for this.

Regardless of which of the above you choose to use as the platform, the Eagle M4FB pouches are the best of both worlds and offer the ability to run them open-top or closed. The kydex lining allows you to run the pouches open-top for 99% of usage but they have a secure-able flap if you find yourself needing better retention.

What I use is somewhat of a combination of the two. The Eagle M4 Chest Rig combines the kydex retention of the open-top magazine pouches but they are sewn-in to the chest rig. The pouches don't have the flaps, but I've been using one of these for a couple of years in multiple classes and matches without issue.

Actually use them for what?

If you are just running around playing on the range open top are fine.

But if you are crawling around in the mud getting shot at the closed top ones will be a bit slower on the reload, but will keep a lot more crud out of your magazines.

You could go with a compromise and use a combination of open and closed top mag carriers. Have 1 or 2 open top carriers for faster mag changes, and the rest closed top to keep your mags cleaner and more reliable.
