twist rates

I'm looking to get a new AR-15 soon and was wondering if the 1/7 twist rate is acceptable for 55gr bullets. I say this because this is the most commonly available ammo if SHTF, but I also want to be able to run heavier defense rounds when I get hired on with a LE agency. Any one with experience shooting 55gr through a 1/7 bbl please chime in on how they perform at various distances. I would also consider a 1/9 if that would work better for the 55gr. Another question what is the average weight range of LE ammo and is the 1/7 even necessary? Any replies will be helpful and appreciated.

thanks

Nate

It will work fine.
Most SD ammo is 69 to 75gr, although TAP does make 55gr also.

It wont make a difference wih grain bb's. You need a tighter twist ate to stabilize the heavier bullets.

1/9 can also handle 55-75 grain bullets

A 1-7 will work just fine. All of my 223 AR15s are 1-7 and they are very accurate with all bullet weights. 1-9 twists are sketchy with heavier bullets(68+). You have to test them to be sure. The 1-7 is the best for 55+ some people believe it will over-spin the bullet causing it to tear itself apart in flight. I have never had that problem with using as low as 35gr bullets in 223. those loads were factory spec and very accurate to 200yards.

Oh yeah I have shot 55gr FMJ through my 16in carbine and repeatedly hit a 400yrd 12in steel plate.

This rifle with a 3X9-32 scope.
