I'm looking to go from my GG&G 4 rail handguards to the more traditional and lighter stock plastic handguards. I enjoy having those rails there BUT I really don't use any of that rail space except for a mounted light and they add a lot of weight it feels like to the front end of my weapon.

I need to put her on a diet it weighs in at 9 lbs

What all is involved with going to the stock handguards. There is no slip ring on mine so that would have to be installed which I assume will involve removing the front sight base or the entire barrel assy.

Yes, it will involve taking the flash hider and FSB off to put a handguard cap on. No need to pull the barrel as it will not go on from the other end.

Copy. This will be the first time I've went this indepth in dissembling an AR. I've never removed a FSB before. Its good to know I don't have to take that off I thought it went behind the "wagon wheel" (not sure what to call it) on the receiver end of the barrel.

I'd suggest that you at least consider installing an inexpensive, lightweight, aluminum free-float tube such as the excellent DPMS tube. It's a two-piece tube, with the barrel nut part that fits a standard barrel nut wrench.
