Inexpensive Scope?
I have been playing around with different scopes on my Bushmaster (M4A3 type config), and cannot seem to find a decent variable power scope.
Reddots: Most of them are plain trash and have some rather nasty parallax despite being "parallax free up to 100 yards". I did break down and spend the money for a Bushnell Holosight and can say that it is dead on accurate. I have not gone past 100 yards with it. Fixed Power Scopes: I have tried several scopes and have to say that a cheap 4 power scope that was purchased at the gun show seems to work the best for my needs up to 100 yards. Variable Power Scopes: This is where in run into a problem. I can pick up a decent variable power scope from say, Walmart for about $35-45. But the problem is that they are rather large and defeat the purpose of having a light weight carbine. I like the variable power since I can zoom in on the target and get better details as to where my shots are hitting without having to switch over to a spotting scope. I have a scoped Mosin 91 with a 4-12x power scope that I love for the above stated reason. But having a monster like that on a M4 is, well rather goofy looking. I picked up a NcStar 3-9x power scope for $35 from a buddy. I like this scope, its accurat but I cannot get the visual clairity adjusted to my liking. I know its a NcStar, there should be my 1st problem Anyone have any recomendations on a decent variable power compact scope that wont break the bank? |

The first thing you should is up your spending limit for a decent varipower scope. A good cheap scope is just that cheap and the word good should be deleted. My personal favorite scope for an M4 configeration would be a 1 1/2 to 4 power. Look at major scope mfgs and compare weight and price.
If you ever think you will defend your life with this weapon and scope how much can you spend? If its just for shooting cans go for the cheap scope and dont worry, just replace it when needed, but dont expect the same accuracy and service as a good scope. You generally get exactly what you pay for. Shoot often and accurate. Hillbilly Jim |

What do you consider breaking the bank?
If you don't mind my asking how much have you spent trying to get a good in-expensive scope? You say you have a Bushnell HS. Have you looked at the LaRue Po'Boy? It's a 2.5x magnifier, with flip to side mount.. Runs about 2 bills. If you call the order in, you can get a lower version so you HS wouldn't need a riser. For a variable check out the Millet DMS-1, again it'll run ya about 2 bills or so.

If you want good glass then your going to have to fork out some money. I dont believe theres a scope I would trust a trphy hunt on that would cost less than $270.00
Nikon makes a buckmaster thats good glas in that price range i mentioned. I put one on my sniper build and its clear and repeatable.

+ 1 on the millet dms-1 , I have one on my M4A3 Bushy it's great leave it on 1 power for close targets but you have the option of 4 power. Get a set of ARMS #22 high throw lever rings and you will be good to go. Then add a flip up rear sight for back up.

i seen a house brand optic at a gun show a few weeks ago that was pretty inexpensive right at $100 or so i believe it was called a Seal. it was not to big and the Glass actually had very good clarity the over all size of it was probably about 2 1/2 - 3X bigger than say an Acog
however i have not seen them anywhere else. |

Heard good things about the Millets. I got a Barksa SWAT and it is very good for the price. Like everyone has said, with glass the old adage of - "you get what you pay for" is true.
