I made a boo-boo last night.. I did what I am not supposed to do and stuck a qtip in the key, and the tip stayed.. I tried everything from a drill bit to a homemade patch worm type deal, to shooting it all the way through with compressed air.. Nothing worked.. I ended up having to remove the key from BCG.. I put it back on, the question is, what will happen if I dont restake it?? I tightened it back down really tight and i would always check it when i cleaned it.. Did I mess up really bad?

I pulled the bolts out of my first AR not knowing what they were and I never had any issues with it. They are not staked properly on half the AR's out there anyway so I don't see it as a problem. Just make sure to check them when you have the rifle torn down.

Bushmaster stakes then, just not to mil specs.. BUT even with them staked, they still came off very easy.. They were not loose, but I didnt need a breaker bar to get them off..

First time they come loose, I use Loctite on them, and then stake them myself. I have not had a problem after that.

If its a serious social use rifle, the gas key should be staked. If it works loose it will affect the functioning of the rifle. If the consequences are severe enough (you standing there getting killed because your rifle isn't working) the likelyhood of it happening is largely irrelevant. Go over to m4carbine.net and do some research on staking.
If its a range toy, and the only consequence is that the gun quits running and you have to take it home, then I wouldn't sweat it. What bushmaster may or may not do, or the fact that a bunch of ARs out there aren't stake and seem to run fine, is irrelevant to me. The AR is already not the most reliable system in the world, to knowingly decide to reduce its reliability further is sort of an odd decision for me. Again, if its a weapon, stake it, if its a range toy, I'd still stake it, but its probably not as important.

Unless he's a member of an l.e. entry team and using his personal AR at work, then the liklihood of his using his AR for "serious social work" is somewhere between infinitesimal and zero...but probably closer to zero.

Staking the key isn't a "rocket science" event. I'd just stake it myself.

Use nail polish remover or a degreaser on the threads of the bolts and the bolt carrier use red locktite and crank the screws down. let it sit overnight and shoot. If it loosens again have it staked properly if not have fun. I have had 4 AR's and only my Armalite was properly staked. 2 of my Bushmasters had no staking whatsoever.

All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting.
