For man size targets, a 4x zoom is plenty for anything out to 600 yards or less, some will even say it is good out to 800 yards.

In the $200 price range, there is really only one option and that is the Millet DMS. But even with the Millet it is luck of the draw if you end up with a good scope or not. I have 2 Millets, one the glass has a fish eye effect (fuzzy around the edges if you are slightly off center), and the glass on this one is not that clear. My other one has crystal clear glass that is great in low light condition and picking up shadows in really bright condition, it comes very close to my ACOG in clarity, but it has the "fungus problem" on the brightest setting at night.
The first part I agree with. But the second part ...
You're really just saying spend more money, or don't buy a scope.
Millet is the only choice and their QA is bad It doesn't make much sense to endorse something and then say you have 2 of them and they both have problems.

i remembered I had a 4x32 scope that came with my ruger 10/22, tried to put it on but the AR railing is much larger than the scopes Maybe I have to get new mount rings for it, but I sort of want a newer and variable magnification scope. I took a look at that Nikon prostaff on ebay, that looks pretty good also.

Since you have to remove the front sights to use a scope on the upper receiver railing, do you have to rezero when you reinstall the front sights? Could I use something like this to mount the scope on? I would like to keep iron sights intact.

For $200 it is not bad and gets the job done. Don't expect much when you are budgeting. To me you should spend just as much on optics, if not more than the gun. The gun is a rudimentary device, while the scope is where the technology is. How many gunsmiths do you see out there? How many scopesmiths?

A Millet will serve you just fine for a couple of years until you are able to save up for a S&B.

Why do you need to remove the Front sight? You barely even notice the front site. For my 4x ACOG, the front site looks like a piece of hair from the bottom of the 6 oclock position to about 1/8th up the scope. It is not even close to the POA. Anything greater than 4x and the "hair" will disappear. For about 6x and higher the front sight will disappear completely.

I'd go with a Burris or Nikon. For the low end, they are the best of the bunch IMO.

One of the best budget set ups is the Millet DMS-1 and the CAA 1 piece mount. I've ran mine in a tactical rifle match and it works. No it's not the top of the line- but for $200 for the scope and $28 for the mount you can't go wrong.

I got a Bushnell Banner "dawn to dusk" 4-12x40 from Natchezss.com for $80 on closeout... Seems to hold a zero well, lets in plenty of light, and the spring-operated air rifle guys say they hold a zero and last for ever for them. Compared to a spring-operated air rifle, anything below a .50 is a piece of cake for a scope, let alone a .223...

Doing the research, I came to the conclusion that the scope I ended up getting (above) is the best bang for the buck in the "cheapo" scope market...

This was the cheapest price I found on them, plus they came with a pair of binoculars...
Natchez Shooters Supplies - Bushnell Products - SCOPE 4-12X40 AO MATT W/TA BINOC

Also, if you're putting it on a flat-top (you mentioned removing the carry handle), I found what I think is the best bang for the buck in the 1-piece scope mounts for the AR to be the ProMag mount... I got it for $40, also at Natchezss
Natchez Shooters Supplies - ProMag Magazines Products - AR-15 FLAT TOP SCOPE MOUNT

Both are on here: Got the new AR to the range yesterday...

IMO, scopes are like a lot of things (especially AR-15 things)... The price per value curve is generally exponential... If you look around enough, and shop smart enough, you can usually get 95% of the functionallity for 1/2 to 1/3 of the price...

Mike
