Flash Hiders..what the difference?
So I'm looking at the multitude of different flash hiders, and I could easily pick out a handful or two that I think look really cool. But from a functionality standpoint, is there really any difference?

Well all those flash hiders/flash suppressors will get you put in jail. What you are actually looking at are muzzle brakes which are entirely legal.

Hmm.... I've used some nice muzzle breaks. If these that I'm looking at are considered muzzle breaks, then their functionality must suck.

But to the original question not all flash hiders are created equal. The Vortex is one of the best, the Phantom is a good deal for the money. Muzzle brakes are great on competion guns but they are not great on a CQB weapon. Pat

Alaskapopo is correct. I'm in Texas and we can use which ever as long as the barrel is over all length is 16". Some states are different, but I just purchased a JTD 14 1/2" barrel with permanent Phantom 5C1 attached. I also have a Oly arms 16" with a Vortex and a 11 1/2" with 5 1/2" flash hider.
Flash hiders were designed to hide the fire when exiting the barrel. Thats why the Vortex and Phantom hide 99% of the flash. Compensator's are designed to keep the barrel level while the gases exit for follow up shots, thats why they use them in competition. My understanding is that the compensator shoots gases up to keep the barrel down. Muzzle devices do the same thing, but shoots the gases to the sides. I've seen the JP muzzle device shot at a gun range and he was able to shoot repeatedly without any movement of the barrel. |
