AR Newb

I'm looking to build an AR-15. I do not want 5.56x45mm, I'd prefer 7.62x39R, or some other higher powered round. I'm looking for a good barrel (read as good as one can get. I'm also wanting top-tier equipment all the way around, but I'm not a huge fan of having rails all the way around the front grip. I do want a forward grip, and I do want to mount optics on top but in general I want it to look clean.

NOW FOR THE FUN PART!

I'm a complete AR-15 newb, and am really looking for suggested configurations, and a place to start. Let me know what you guys think.

well, you can go to the ar10 platform and go 308, or stay with the ar15 platform and go 6.8 spc.

ok, obviously we've established the quantity of newb I am, I didn't know the AR-10 platform existed. Any thought on brands, can these be assembled like the AR-15?

7.62x39 is definitely not a higher powered round than 5.56x45
.223 moves ALOT faster
i think RRA has them in .308, ive seen them in some weird calibers
6.8 seems to be the golden child right now, but .223 is cheep. (so is 7.62, but 7.62x39 is **** for long range.)

DPMS makes a couple of ARs in 7.62x39 and associated uppers and lowers. Armalight, DPMS, RRA, and a few others make AR10s in .308 and several make complete uppers in a variety of calibers for both the AR15 and AR 10 platforms.
If you are brand new I wouldn't suggest trying to build your own. If you are convinced of getting that caliber than get it in a gun made for that cal - either an SKS or AK.
Here is a link to ARs in that cal:
DPMS: AR-15 Rifles, Parts and Accessories.

7.62X39 is not a "higher-powered round."

I guess it all depends upon how you define "Power"

7.62x39 has about 1500 FP of muzzle energy 5.56 only has 1,300 FP.

It also has a heavier bullet and more momentum. That bullet is also a larger diameter and legal for deer hunting in most states.

I think the 7.62x39 has "Higher Power" than the 5.56 Nato.

Unless there is some definition of power I'm not familiar with.

Anyhow

Trelane, the 7.62x39 AR's are known to have feeding problems. The soviet round is designed to work in a curved magazine. Try to stuff more than 7 or 8 of them into a typical AR magazine and you will have problems.

My next AR is going to be a 20" flat top with a free float tube in 6.8 SPC. I'm going to build mine from a Model1sales kit.

Should look something like this:
