Live And Learn

OK, I only have one car on blocks in the front yard so I’m not really a redneck so don’t make fun of my bench rest. What I want to show is the effect of the barrel on my RRA Predator Pursuit not being “floated”. Now I only have about 50 rounds thru the gun and I’m still setting up the scope on it. What I thought would be a good idea was to “secure” the front with a little bungee cord over the top to my bench. The grip could then be supported by a block of wood.

Well I loaded 10 rounds, set the target at about 125 yards and began my first set. My rate of fire was about I every 10 seconds and I could get back on target with very little movement. Since it was about 90 degrees I didn’t want to stop to check my 5 shots, I would go ahead and shoot the remaining rounds then check’em.

Well when I got up to the target, I was shocked at where the rounds had gone. I thought it was my very expensive Simmons scope not holding zero. Upon my trek back to contemplate what went wrong, I was looking at where I had put the bungee cord. Surely, just because the cord was putting pressure on the barrel this was causing the group to be 3 inches low. Well I be damned. Removed the cord and the next 10, although slightly right, was where I had left off of from my last time shooting. What did I learn…floating is a good thing and put the cord on the tube where the bi-pod is!

Nice AR, I like the setup you have going there. Do you really need to secure the front end that much to zero your scope? I'd think the bipod and a hand under your pistol grip would do?

Well not really but it would jump a little bit. What I was going for, without a good bench rest and a gun rest (like the Lead Sled), was a way to get the best sight in as possible.

you are canceling the effects of the free float tube by securing it by the front sight, I would move the bungee back a little bit.
