Does your AR-15 have this gap?

Sometimes I get this stinging sensation when I shoot my AR. I traced it down to this gap underneath the charging handle.

At first I thought it was something in the stock. But after shooting a bunch of 22LR I found this as a result of the crud 22LR leaves.

It's not coming from the top of the charging handle. If it were, the Gas Buster Charging Handle would fix it.

As you can see in the first pic, the upper and lower meet up fine. So, does that appear normal? Does yours have that same gap?

I'm going out on a limb and guess that's normal wear.

I can post pics of my AR with ~ 2500-3000 rounds through it [i can't match your most excellent photography skills though!]

That's what Del-ton said too. "Normal wear". This rifle is new and it was doing it right off the bat. I have 550 22LR and 120 .223 through it.

My camera has a close up mode. I took the pics outside in the bright sun.

If you think about it, it's only anodized aluminum... The wear is merely cosmetic and shouldn't be cause for concern. You can replace the charging handle with a variety of different makes that should be more durable. I personally wouldn't worry too much about it

I'm not concerned about the cosmetic aspect. I'm concerned about the stinging sensation on my cheek when the gas and any unburned powder hit my face. It feels like I'm getting stung by an ant or like getting a hypodermic needle shot in my face.

It's not horrible pain but enough to make you wince. It takes away from the fun of shooting.

Got plans of shooting it soon? I'd like to see what it looks like after shooting but before cleaning.

I may be speaking with much ignorance here, but is it possible your gas key isnt mating with the bubble flare on the gas tube well enough to keep the excess gas from escaping via the gap in your charging handle?
