Cleaning a AR
I just bought a new Bushmaster AR, it talks about cleaning the inside and outside. Can anyone tell me what they use, oil bore cleaner. I do not want to mess up the finish. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance |

First thing I do is use a foaming bore cleaner in the barrel. Let that sit 15-20 minutes. While that is setting I clean the bolt, bolt carrier, and firing pin with Break Free CLP. I then go back to the barrel and run a copper brush through it. Then after that I run several patches through until no more black comes out. After the barrel is clean I clear out all the residue from the upper receiver. I lightly oil the trigger group, reassemble, then use my finger to run oil over all exterior metal parts. I probably missed some stuff, but that's the gist of it.
Rem Oil by the way. |

I use Breakfree CLP on EVERYTHING and then add a bit 'o Hoppes on contact points.

I use Hoppes.
Quick question for those that use foaming cleaner or those that have used it. Wouldn't the foam get into the gas port and tube? What are the effects of it not being removed from this area?

For my AR, I mostly use BreakFree CLP. I use Powder Blast or carb cleaner for the bolt.

For me, Rem Oil completely evaporates in a few hours, where Breakfree CLP is still oily days later - and I need that living on the Oregon coast.

Pretty much use Breakfree CLP on everything. If the bore is really bad I may use something like Barnes. For in between cleanings or on high wear areas I sometimes add some Breakfree LP.

You can blow out the gas tube with brake cleaner if you like. I've never bothered, and have had zero problems. The Break-Free FBC is great stuff. I follow it up with a brush, followed by patches with Hoppe's No. 9, until they come out clean, then a patch of Break-Free CLP, and finally a dry patch. The bore comes out spotless.

i use break cleaner, spray the bolt and inside the reciever liberally with it, then just wipe down. for the barrel i use whatever copper cleaner I have available such as hoppes or bore foam, then will patch the barrel about 4-5 times.... then lube everything with motor oil afterwards, about 10 minutes tops.
