Life Liberty Etc has a AR15 stripped lower video. I used a hammer to push the pins in, later on my friend said he actually used pliers to squeeze in the pins. Tight castle nut is really important tho, I had a nasty jam because my castle nut was loose (i didnt have tool) and that back plate came off a little. Guy at the range had a tool and helped me out

It also depends on how much of the AR you intend to build yourself. Buying a kit or complete upper usually comes out cheaper anyway, plus you don't have to spend money on other tools.

So for assembling the lower, all you really need is punches, a hammer (vice helps) and a tool to tighten the castlenut.
For the upper, it depends, but you basically need an armorer's wrench, and a way to hold the receiver. If you go free-float, you need a wrench that works with your stuff. You will need a punch if you're going to remove the FSB.

As I said before, other than punches, the DPMS tool does it all. AR15.com of course has step by steps with links to videos and pictures.
