Talk to me about blowback
What causes it? Why is it more common in SBRs and suppressed rifles?

the term "blowback" is normally used for how an autoloading rifle system operates.
Howstuffworks "The Blowback System" If you are talking about something else, I don't know what it is. Can you elaborate?

I'm thinking I get blowback gas in my face when I shoot my AR. I want to understand it better. The PRI Gas Buster Charging Handle is an $89 solution. I was hoping for a less expensive solution.

Where the CH meets the upper there is a slight gap- this allows some of the gas to blow back into your face. Hence the gas buster or the DIY with silicone to correct it. I never noticed it much until shooting suppressed with my 10.5"- and even then it's not too bad.

Is it escaping from where the gas tube meets the bolt carrier?

The ports on the short barreled rifles are located in a pistol position, which is at a much higher pressure than when located in the carbine or rifle position. So, once the carrier comes off of the gas tube during the cycle, that gas gets fed down the channel and around the gap in the charging handle/upper. Suppress rifles dump even more gas back that way. Depending on where you put your head on the stock, you get more than others.

Its called "blow by" - hot gases blow by the rings on the piston (bolt) in the cylinder (bolt carrier) then escape thru the gap in the charging handle
