Why flash hiders are a good idea.

Please don't yell at me about the terrible grip technique, that's not me shooting but that is my Bushmaster mid length with no flash hider (stupid ban...) Thanks to my cousin's excellent digital camera and good timing the whole fireball was caught and I think you can even see the blur of the bolt in mid-travel. It was around 3pm when this was taken so there was still a good amount of sunlight, so I can only imagine if that photo was taken around dusk/night.

In case anyone's curious, the ammunition used was Federal Premium V-Shok 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

uncle giggles.

assuming the ban is for flash hiders, and not threaded muzzles, call HDI (702.566.1000) and order one of PWS FSC556 muzzle brakes. the flash suppression is as good if not better than an A2 birdcage, but the ATF has tested and ruled it as NOT A FLASH SUPPRESSOR.

Uncle Giggles, I see you live in Lexington, KY (Kentuckian here myself). May I recommend either the AAC Blackout flash suppressor mounts or the YHM Phantom QD flash suppressor mounts. In either case, you have a flash suppressor that works very well... and serves as a Quick Detach mount for the sound suppressor (a.k.a. 'Silencer') that you may legally purchase through a Class III dealer in this great state of ours. The process is not as difficult and scary as many ill-informed gunshop owners want you to believe and the investment is extremely rewarding.

Here's a 'casual' pic of my AR in it's current setup, complete with YHM Phantom 7.62 suppressor. The 7.62 is a multi-use can that can be mounted to suppress 7.62, 5.56, and .22 platforms. It's a bit heavy but this way I can have one suppressor to share between my .308 Win bolt-guns and my AR. I could also use it if I converted my AR to .300 Whisper or 6.8 SPC, so it works for me.

Check these guys out, I'm sure they'd be happy to answer any questions you might have:

Advanced Armament Corp. (AAC).
Yankee Hill Machine Company.

The Class III Dealer I go through is DoubleStar Arms out of Winchester, but there may be one closer to you.

P.S. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban that prohibited flash suppressors expired under it's sunset clause. If you check out the firearms in gunshops around Lexington you'll see tons of firearms with all the 'evil features' (including flash suppressors) available for sale again.

The rifle was a post-ban model. I believe that included flash hiders, could be mistaken though. Not sure about the history of this rifle since I bought it used. The barrel is not even threaded. I could by all means get it threaded and get a hider on there, local gunsmith only wants $10 to thread it, but since I planned on replacing the entire upper with a new one (probably LMT) there's really no point since it will undoubtedly have one already.

I really want an M44 Mosin one of these days so I can put on a really good pyrotechnics show

Nah, flash hiders are totally legal here (Kentucky) he just had a rifle built during the Clinton Ban years (that prohibited flash hiders or threaded barrels capable of accepting flash hiders, among other things).

Uncle Giggles, would you shoot me a PM about who was willing to do threading work for only $10? Most everything I own is getting threaded these days but it's costing me a pretty penny. That seems like an insanely low fee, so I'd be curious about the quality of his work.
