I have a DPMS LR-308 and I love it, but it gets pricey to shoot a 308. I hear everyone talking about uppers and lowers. Is the barrel considered part of the upper? The reason I ask is becuase I was woundering if I could buy a 223 upper and use it with my lower and switch my 308 upper with the 223 upper just to save some money on ammo when I am plinking. Thanks in advance!

The barrel is part of the upper but a .308 magwell (part of the lower) is unique so you can't slap a .223 upper on it.

You are stuck with .308, and any derivatives of that cartridge that are available for a .308 lower that you can find, with that set up.

yep he is right. but you can go to a web site and look for your hometown on it and buy one from a neighbor. i will email you the address.

interesting concept... a new upper, BCG and mag that will will allow the .308 AR shoot .223/5.56.

The standard 5.56 barrel could be used....
A Magwel converter could be used so standard AR mags would work.
The standard 5.56 bolt could be used...

BC & forged upper would be the only things that need to be custom made...

There might be an issue with the buffer spring though...
