Anyways... be that as it may... what can we all do to minimize or eliminate the risk of slam fire in our AR's? I haven't got any local deserts to go to fire my weapon. I have our Sportsman's Club which has a 300 yard range. I became a member but they make it very clear no full auto without prior Board permission. I don't ever want to be in the position of having my AR making its own decisions.
?
Bree,

In all of the posts I've read from Bladerunner on the ar15 website he has denied repeatedly that he modified the rifle over and over again.

Either he is lying or he is not in which case the feds have a case against him. Personally, what i think about the feds doesn't matter but in the big picture why are they spending so much time on this when they should be out doing so many other things??

It's not a surprise why so many hate the ATF and other government agencies that waste their time on such crap when they should be spending time on REAL issues.

My .02 cents....

The AR15 is a rifle based on the full auto M16. Obviously it is made to fire in full auto so why would a modified Ar15 be any more dangerous than the M16?

Why would the gun explode in somebodies face? I don't see that happening. OK, it's illegal to convert a semi auto into full auto but I don't think telling people that your AR is going to explode because you want to rapid fire it is cool unless you have some evidence of this happening.

I've never heard of an AR15 exploding but that's just me or maye that's just ATF Bullcrap scare tactics? Which is it?

Longballsd, look in the broken bolt carrier survey topic that is stickied to the AR forum if you want to see what an AR looks like from the inside out. Though I have seen many photos in worse shape. Or go to youtube and do a search there if you wanna see what it looks like when it happens. Here's a good one. Also caused by bad reloads and user ignorance just past the 1 minute mark.
YouTube - AR-15 rifle explosion

By no means am I saying that kabooms are caused by FA fire, but since you said you hadn't seen one blown up I figure I'd point you in the right direction.

And for what it's worth, it happens several times a year for various reasons. Just look for any AR related topics that also has KABOOM written in them. I've seen some pics that are just bits and pieces of parts.

The trick is to keep all the pressure of the bullet going in front of you and not toward you. There is tons of force inside the chamber when a round goes off. When a primer is punctured or a casing splits, that's what causes the aluminum recievers to self destruct.

Something that is very probable if you modify your firing pin that can puncture a primer or from weak/soft or incorrectly installed primers.

The AR/M16 family of weapons is designed to fire with its breach locked, meaning bolt lugs fully engaged, in a slam fire the lugs are not always fully engaged meaning that all of the energy absorbed by the lugs is transfered straight into the unlocked bolt essentially turning it into a projectile in the wrong direction. This is not a scare tactic it is the truth, in a M16 the auto sear delays the hammers fall enough for the bolt to fully lock before it fires in bump firing you can not pull the trigger fast enough to destroy the weapon unless another component fails namely the sear, bolt head or a catastrophic case failure where the case head is ripped off and another case fed into the body of the first case. Modifying the weapon to fire out of battery is stupid and dangerous. You would have to look at a exploded veiw or the parts of the differant systems to see the differance but they are there, the M16's bolt carrier is heavier and more shrouded to make contact with the Auto Sear, the Hammer is differant as is the sear or in the case of the 16 A2 there is the burst mechanism. The AR is designed specificly to not fire FA for civilian use and by modifying it to do otherwise you are risking destroying the rifle and harming yourself or anyone else close enough to get hit by flying parts. If you dont believe a AR can explode just go to AR15.com and search for KaBooms.

I agree totally concerning ATF and their focus. Whatever the case may be with Olofson, he is a little fish who got a lot of undeserved attention. Probably some glory seeker driving it all.

Thanks for the lesson, I didn't know this.
