Quick Question on AR pricing.

I went to my local gun store to price .22's and saw they had an AR-15 (behind the glass) I asked the clerk about it and he said it was a bushmaster and was the post ban model with a 5 round mag and no extras. I asked him how much and he said $779.00 (brand new). I did not have time to take a close look at it to determine if he was correct about the brand.

Is 779.00 in the ballpark for how much a basic model busmaster costs. It seems kind of low to me and I am suspicious. I also didnt know that these come with 5 round mags, I thought they came with 10 round mags in NY. Does this sound too good to be true or are the rest of the dealers in my area overpricing their guns?

If this is in fact a bushmaster I feel that I will have to buy it asap.

Thanks in advance.

Check the specific model against what you find online and make them an offer accordingly

It's probably the Bushy A1 Shorty. If that's what you want then it's a great price. Is it new or used?

The majority of the Bushy's are in the $850-$925 range for the most part. There are lots of options depending on what your plans are for it.

Do you want a detachable carry handle? I did because I wasn't putting optics on it right away. What length barrel? 14.5", 16" or longer? Lightweight or regular weight? I have the superlight. There are lots of things to think about, trust me.

Most likely you won't know what you want until after you buy the first one or after you have spent some time around them and hopefuly shooting different ones to figure out what you want.

Everyone will have an opinion but for starters the A3 with a detachable handle (probably and extra $100 for this feature) is a great way to start because if you want to add optics to the AR you have lots of choices. You can remove the carry handle for an infinite amount of options or you can mount optics directly to the carry handle.

If you aren't getting optics right away you can shoot fine with just the iron sights that come with the AR.

I prefer the 16" barrel over the 14.5" because theoretically you should be a better shot with a little longer barrel. Good luck.

Excellent advice. I had buyers remorse with my first AR15 when I bought a shorty. I found out later that I could not shoot anything over 55 grain as they would fly all over. I shoud have bought a 20". The plus side was that it was an A3 with the detachable handle. For me the handles are useless since I have giant hands and stacking a scope on top seemed cumbersome. It was a cool little rifle and I became a good shot with it after I figured out what it needed.

Instead of buying something on impulse you might want to figure out what you want to do with a rifle in the platform. CQB? Long Range? Will the weight matter? Scope or no scope? Furniture?

The gun usually ends up being 1/3 of the total build cost.

Thank your for all your responses. I have not had chance to look at it again but it sounds like the pricing is not that far off. Most of the dealers at gun shows are charging more.

As far as what I want the gun for: I do not plan on using for super long distances, I want to use only iron sights. I want something I can go to the range and plink with and sharpen my iron sight skills and I want it for self defense when my XD is not appropriate (SHTF scenerio or more likely isolated riot or armed prisoner escape, lots of prisions in upstate NY) As of now I am not planning on modifying it and would prefer to keep it mostly stock. I know that is kind of boring but I like to keep things simple. I would rather spend my extra money on stockpiling ammo.

My gut feeling tells me that if this in fact a Bushmaster, it is a good deal and I should buy as soon as possible which will be in about a month.
