We think that there was either a double charge or bad powder (potentially both.) The shell stuck in the chamber, and the gas blew back through the bolt carrier, blowing the bottom out. The gas vented out through the magazine. It blew all of the cartriges, follower, spring and base plate out on to the ground, and had enough energy to launch the magazine body after it. The upper receiver is bulged, the bolt carrier split on the bottom and cracked on the top, and the extractor is bent back. I have yet to get the shell out of the chamber, but it ruptured in there.

In this pic, you can see the front end of the carrier. Note the crack along the top edge below the gas key.

Upper receiver, note the bulge below the ejection port.

The bent extractor, and the chunk of the case rim that was ripped out.

From what I could see, the lower appeared to be intact. When I'm able to afford it, I'm going to build a new upper. If anyone has a better idea of what happened, I would like to hear it. I am also wondering if my barrel would be reusable. If there are any other pictures that would be useful I'll try to take them.
Possibly a squib. I blew up a Springfield XD with a squib. It is impossible to overload a .223 cartridge. And bad powder is doubtful also.
NOw the wrong powder is a possibility also. Did the gun blow up after a malfunction or did it blow up when you pulled the rigger? In other words, ws there a problem with the previous round? Did the previous round eject properly or did you have to eject it by hand?

Colt pre-ban H-bar. Several thousand rounds thru it. Never had a problem with the blot or carrier.

Model 1 Sales, Owned about 2 years with a kit rifle I put together for 3 gun. Didn't keep a perfect round count but had to be around 3000 maybe? Shouldn't snap in half I know that much.

ETA:
I forgot, this broke during my second to last stage, end of the stage thankfully. Anyway the funny thing is I managed to shoot about 2 or 3 more rounds with it like this, as I thought it was a malfunction and just rolled with it. Obviously I stopped after I inspected and saw half the bolt still in the chamber and the rest of the bcg locked back.

This is pretty wild ... I had my AR go KaBOOM! on me with almost identical damage about 7-8 years ago. I was shooting Federal XM193 ammo.

Just a little update:

Even though it's still considered crap still, Model 1 Sales DID send me a free replacement brand new bolt. For backup only now of course...

my bolt in my cmmg short barreled rifle has never had any problems, it is the upgraded bolt that cmmg offerers and is in a m16 carrier

i only have about 1000 rounds through it so the long term reliability is unknown at this point
