By feed ramps, I'm assuming you're asking about cleaning the area around the chamber.

That would be a chamber brush. I use an Otis brush for that.

Boresnake and q-tips and old nylon toothbrush for the rest.

As for cleaning the firing pin hole, correct method requires dissassembly of the bolt (and dental floss mint flavoring optional)

I bought a Dewey rod, jag and all that other stuff that goes with it when I bought my AR. After freaking out as the Jag got stuck in the first inch of barrel, I trashed it off on someone I hate and now use a snake.

OK, not really,
I still use it with a mop if I have a lead/copper build-up, but that jag was intentionally lost.

I should have known better, because I use a snake on everything else, but my service time did not include rifles, so that weapon was a new experience and I let excitement get the better of me.

I heard that you are NOT supposed to get solvent inside the upper because it can ruin the coating that's in there that protects and lubes against the bolt carrier.. I heard you are just supposed to use it in the chamber / bore...

Is this true?

If so what do you clean the inside of the upper with... CLP?

I'll be interested in what others have to say as well on this. I've been spraying the upper with breakfree to get the major crud out and then I clean with CLP and lastly finish with some FP10.

I wouldn't call break-free a solvent. It seems like pretty mild stuff.

I have been using non-chlorinated brake cleaner for a long time. It is even safe on plastic so I don't see why you could not use it on the reciever. It does leave like some kind of stain sometimes, like dry skin kinda look but this easily goes away with a little break free or motor oil. After a good spray and wipe down, I lube liberally. For the most part I like run all my weapons really wet.

I found some good cosmetic foam wedges and make up removing pads in the womens make up section. They can be cut to shape or used as is to clean various areas of both rifles and pistols. They work well and are pretty cheap. Don't be embarrassed to shop that section of the store

I bought a little pump spray bottle at Target and I fill it with Hoppes #9.

I spray the chamber, parts, or whatever else with it and then blast some non chlorinated break cleaner to clear it out.

Never had any issues on pistols or my AR.

You do need a good chamber brush though.
