What is the difference between AR15 & M4
I have very little knowledge about these black rifles so bear with me here. I have been putting off buying one, but with the current political climate I think I need to go ahead and get one before it's too late.
What is the difference between the AR-15 and the M4? Will AR-15 mags work in M4s? Between the AR-15 and the M4 which would you buy? I look to you guys to point me in the right direction! Thanks!

The M4 is just a variation of the AR15 platform.
Wikipedia actually has a ton of gun stuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_Carbine Yes the mags are the same for both since it is the same platform. Most of the 16" AR15s with an adjustable stock are considered an M4. |

You will not be able to buy an M4. Ever. The M4 is a fully auto capable weapon manufactured for military purposes. Civilian ownership is a big no-no. AR15s built to look like an M4, affectionately known as M4geries, are very popular however. The biggeset difference is the FCG and "fun switch"

My bad
Not enough coffee yet. Why can't a civilian own a select fire M4 if they get the stamp? Are you just saying that the M4 is only for the military designation and even a select fire AR15 that the police or civilians own is just a select fire AR15? |

M4's were never manufactured prior to 1986. So they can never be legally owned by a civilian

Any AR15 that has been converted to select-fire, uses parts manufactured and registered prior to 1986. the parts required to convert an AR to select-fire require the same forms/licenses as a registered MG and usually end up costing just about as much

Well, I am still going to refer to my Armalite M4C as my M4!

It still must be manufactured prior to 1986
