silencer's

I've looked thru all the pics and do not see a single one with a silencer on them. why? I realize that they are not legal in all states but they are in 34 of them. I am presently building my ar in 6.8 and am planning to put a quick detatch silencer on it. have to keep the neighbors happy (uninformed) and save my hearing at the range. has anyone had any experience with silencers. lets see how many honest answers I get.

Used one a good while ago, umm I like it, don't use the subsonic ammo, it sucks. Though in 6.8 it might be sufficient. Get a silencer that comes apart for easy cleaning. start the ATF paperwork now it takes a while. I would use non lead on the outside bullets (cleanings easier) other than that have fun, no idea what threads work better or anything like that.

Actually they are called suppressors. Silencer is a Hollywood term. For the most part you are losing more than you are getting with a suppressor. Earplugs are cheaper and you can use one set of $3 earplugs on multiple guns.

Down side of a suppressor:
- harder on the gun
- get a lot of carbon blowback, your face will be black when it's all done.
- $200 tax stamp
- makes your rifle less accurate
- makes your rifle less lethal

But they are cool, and Ieveryone should own at least one. But right now I have a bazillion other things on my list that i need to get before that.

umm the cheytac is more accurate and has more power with a silencer. If you use subsonic ammo you loose power and accuracy, but the silencer in place of ear plugs and the worlds best muzzle break is a viable option.

They are called suppressors, with normal supersonic ammo they just don't have the bang from the gun, you still hear the sonic crack of the bullet.

Only reason I don't have one is cost. And if I build one, I won't do an AR, I'll do a 300 whisper for hogs.

I haven't heard one for a rifle, but I have heard one for a .22 handgun. It does definitly reduce the noise, but replaces it with a loud "air escaping from a high pressure air hose line" if you know what I mean. It was comfortable without hearing protection, but it was far from "Silent".

Check class3sales.com for their selection and pricing. I bought an AK47 from them at a gun show and they were the ones that let me play with their .22 suppressed.

Check with the forum sponsors too as they are key the the forums survival!!!

While I have never shot a suppressed weapon personally, I have done some research on them. Many claim better accuracy with a suppressed rifle due to much lower recoil and muzzle rise. As for being less lethal... I'm not sure at what point a few well placed holes center mass becomes less lethal than a few random ones. The $200 tax stamp does suck without a doubt but that seems to be the price of having big boy's toys in this case.

If my state allowed suppressors, I'd be all for getting one or two of them myself. Our laws mandate sound suppression on just about every vehicle, sound levels are regulated by safety standards in the work place and excessive sound is policed in our neighborhoods yet the law specifically prevents hobbyists to actively reduce harmful sound from their guns and punishes those that violate that law with heavy fines, jail time and a permanent felony record. Makes no sense to me.
