Looking for my first AR 15
I have no idea why I even want or need a AR15, but after reading this website and ordering my XDSC 9mm, I decided I needed another toy.
I honestly thought Bushmaster was the only one who made the AR, but I honestly don't know anything about them. Yes I live under a dark cloud. I am looking for some suggestions on models and brands for first time owners. I will want something that I can put I sight on, so I can pick off Groundhogs if desired. I thank you in advance for your help and suggestions. Heck it will probably end up being another toy to look at. |

Maybe around $1000.00 I want something of good quality and I don't mind adding a scope down the road.

i would recomend building the ar yourself (i would get a striped lower and build that then i would buy a compleated upper) the reson for the compleate upper is it is more difficult to do the upper then the lower and you need to worrie about headspace and such.by building your lower you get to learn how the differewnt parts in your gun work together while saving a little money. also you can get exactly what you want sometime its hard to find the compleated rifle you want with all the random bits and pieces. also is it just for fun or are you going to do some long range shooting (300yard +) or 100 yard max?

now you need to decide what you are going to do with this weapon
you can set up a AR to specialize on any of the above disciplines or you can get one that is very good at somethings and just okay at other things. example a AR with a collapsing stock and 16" barrel wound not be the choice set up for long range target or varmint shooting or AR with a 20" bull barrel would not be the first choice for CQB just a few thoughts I had 40-45 |

Don't know if it's your bag of tea, but if you're a baller on a budget and but still want decent quality AR, you may want to check out this thread, as you can get a complete slighty used (but inspected) rifle on the cheap.. you can modify/add/etc.. at your own leisure and still have spare parts if you chose to change or upgrade certain components. Just a thought...

you get the A3 upper so adding a optics is a snap. however you are likely going to spend more on the optics than you do the rifle. just depending on what you get. ive just recently ordered 2 sets of Midwest Industries aluminum hand guards and a fore grip. next i will be replacing the pistol grips and latter the furniture. i may also later on decide to use some type of gun kote to match the upper and lower finish

May I first suggest that you go to ar15.com or m4carbine.net and read, read, read. Look at all of the pics of all the possibilities, find a style you like that will fit your needs.
It's hard to decide what you want when you have no knowledge, so research first. Just don't grab the first thing you see because of the price. Everyone likes to tell you 500 different things at once, but if you really don't know what you want to start with all it does is confuse you more. Or you might end up with something you didn't want. also if you have a range that rents available you should also try that. my local range rents a variety of configurations for $7.50 per rental + ammo. your not really suppose to shoot your own ammo through their weapons but when ive rented ive taken ammo to fit whatever it was and just purchased 1 box from them just to save money

I bought my AR a few years ago now.Since then there are alot of Great manufactures that has came out.RRA,Stag,S&W M&P and so on.I dont think you can go wrong with the top 4 or 5 manufactures, they should all perform great.I went with Colt,it will always hold its value and I just wanted a Colt.Opinions are like B-holes,everyone has one and nevermind just my 1/2 cent after taxes.
