There are also the SPOT AimPoint knock offs that are pretty damn solid as well. Not quite an AimPoint, but it's close enough for you to figure out if you like the concept, and they are sub $100 with a mount.. and I think that's new from some places.

I would stay away from the lower costs HWS's .. they tend to have wash out issues with any real direct light falling on the diode or glass, FOV issues and like you're seeing and reading, horrible battery life.

I understand that the price point on the EOTech's can be daunting at first and yeah you just want to slap this on a beater trunk gun, I would say that just saving up the extra $160 or so and picking up a used 512 from ARFCOM is going to be something you may end up being extremely grateful for one day.

But like Mike said.. it's your money bro, I can't pass judgment on ya for spending it how you see fit.

Your thinking backwards, if the gun is going to be rattling around in your truck then you need to have a sight that can handle the ill effects of those kinf od conditions. not to mention the temperature and moisture conditions that your trunk can expose a weapon to. Look at the older posts of guys that left their XD's in the car and they rusted all to hell.

Spend the money on good optics, you wont be dissapointed. If you want a cheap red dot with a lifetime warranty, check out www.sightron.com .
I have one and its been an incredible optic thats held zero through hunting, trunk rides, being dropped, etc... It wont look like an Eotech but do you want looks or function?

If you want to baby your gun and just plink then you might be ok with a cheaper optic.
