'nuther question...

WTF does "free float" mean, in terms of handguards and barrels? And I read "BUIS" all the time...what's it stand for?

Here's one more thing: on the RRA site, I was looking at the CAR A4 kit that they have, which is $640 w/o chrome barrel. But, if I'm reading it right, the completed CAR A4 is in the $900 range? Looks to be the same thing, minus a stripped lower. Am I missing something? I'd be happy to buy the kit and get a stripped lower for $120ish and be good to go for $760 instead of $900! Seems too good to be true. I can tell that the completed gun allows for customizing, where the kit doesn't, but the kit seems to have everything I'd need for now. What am I missing? Help me connect the dots!
Here are the links for the two:

I can tell you that free float means just that; it doesn't make any contact with the hand guard or stock, it "floats." Rifles with free float barrels tend to be more accurate.

As far as kit vs. complete rifle your paying for labour and usually a warranty on that work. Don't forget that you pay tax on both the kit and the receiver plus any FFL fees and paper work for said receiver, and possibly shipping for one or both.

I'm not an AR guy but BUIS has something to do with the sights. "Back-up Iron Sights" I think.

You're right. And Budsgunshop.com has some great deals on flat-top Bushmasters right now. A lot of people say you should get the chrome lined barrel.

As far as the difference in price between a complete gun and a "pin-together build", there is an excise tax on firearms. If you buy a stripped lower for $100, you pay tax on a $100 firearm. If you buy an $900 firearm, you pay the tax on a $900 firearm.

The difference in price is the difference in tax paid. And it's legal, as long as you aren't churning out and selling completed rifles by the truckload.
