Sorry if this has been talked about before, but what is the latest on the 6.8x43 SPC round for the AR platform? I've been reading about it after I saw a 6.8 SPC upper for sale on ar15sales.com, and it sounds like a caliber I would want. I saw some of this ammo for sale online, but there wasn't a whole lot of it and it wasn't cheap.

Any thoughts? Has this cartridge been adopted by any military branch, or is it still a novely? From the reports, it sounds like a good performer with appreciable energy and controllable recoil in a not-too-big package.

I THINK the Army has some of their DMRs chambered for it but I'm not positive. I would stick to well known and mass produced calibers.

"If" it is being used by the Army, anywhere, it is in some units that can buy guns and ammo outside of normal acquisition processes.

The Army, as a corporate entity, has decided that the heavier bullets in 5.56 solve the carbine's longer than 200m range lethality problem.

In reality, the .gov depends on the crew-served weapons, snipers and indirect fire to take out longer than 200m targets. The 5.56 is still capable of spectacular damage on the human body in under 200m engagements.

If you're thinking of 6.8 SPC for yourself, you need to ask yourself why. If you like to reload (or want to learn how), ever want to shoot a deer, or do not "believe" that the 5.56 is not lethal enough, and you don't mind the slightly higher recoil, you might want to consider 6.8 SPC.

With the rising costs of 5.56, I'm starting to think about going 6.8 SPC myself.

One thing, though, be sure you get good magazines, there are some bad ones out there, and there is some non-standard ammo out there as well. Do some research here, if you're still interested:

The 6.8 hasn't been adoped by any branch of the service and will likely not ever see extensive use. There have been constant reports of bolt fractures and extractor failures, particularly under heavy usage. The MK 12 SPR and and the 77 grain projectiles in 5.56 have largely alleviated the problem of long range lethality. The 6.8 is tremendously accurate. I cracked open the first case here in Alaska and was surprised at it's accuracy out of a Model 1 20" upper. It was extremely cold when I shot it, too. Remington told me at the show last year that there have not been any large orders for ammunition. Barrett makes the best uppers for them, with heavier bolts, quality barrels, and heat treated extractors along with the best mags for them. I haven't shot either, so I can't tell you how they perform but the round is frighteningly accurate. Ruger is building the Mini-14 in 6.8. This would seem to be a great platform for the cartridge... if Ruger can get their carbine to shoot it accurately.

I've been reading and hearing everywhere that it's the defacto round after the war... Of course none of this is official in the slightest and I hold all of it with a grain of salt.

It's a neat round... I would like it to replace 5.56.
