Need some input before I invest in .223/5.56 ammo.

At present, considering the over all picture
of the ammo world, I would buy what I can
and forget about whether it is 'defensive' or
tactical/practice.

My best stuff is Winchester and of course
CMP armory made. Expensive!!! Yea, $400-
600 per 1,000.

I have a mag or two of Hornady Tap with my AR.

I looks pretty nasty.

Well if there is one thing that .223 is right now, that would be cheap. Lake City or Mil Surplus of one type or another is good stuff. But look to pay around $400 per 1K. Wolf mil classic can be had for half that price, but I have no experience with it. I buy from a semi-local at the gun show. Also the grain weight will change the price a bit.
