Yep, losing your hearing sucks, especially when you're only 17 (I lost some hearing in my right ear last year). Ear muffs and plugs are sold for a reason.

Exactly what I was thinking. Damn, you must have some really bad hearing already if you can even stand to fire an AR without protection. That, or you just want that movie look.

And not just hearing protection. Eye protection is critical as well. Like others have said, "normally" eye protection doesn't do anything. But just wait, one day you will be thankful you wore it.

I don't mean to knock your new AR, I just see WAY too many young adults my age think it's the "cool" thing to do and I firmly believe that SAFETY FIRST, FUN SECOND. Guns can be a lot of fun and very safe if used properly. That includes your protection. There is no excuse for NDs and the like. It is always your fault, your negligence, if something happens.

Put those eyes and ears on, son!

The AR-system vents live gas to the rear portion of the weapon. Normally, this is perfectly safe, unless something bad happens. For this, eye pro is "a good thing".
Having had an AR have a catastrophic "venting issue" through the mag well and back into my face eye wear is a must. You only have two eyes and ears. You look like you're in your 20's. Take care of your body ... you're not bullet proof like you think you are.

I agree that hearing protection is a must. .223 is really loud. I would rather shoot my 30-06 without hearing protection then .223. The 30-06 is a boom where the .223 is a very sharp crack. That being said I always wear protection with every gun; even .22lr.

The only time I do not wear hearing protection is when I am hunting because I rely on my hearing a lot as do most hunters who still can hear. But you are only going to shoot a couple of times a season (if you are lucky) so I consider it ok.
