How evewr I go, I will be doing teh SBR thing as a trust. The problem is building the upper and the cost. I am re-examining my plans for that. I want to do a Noveske Diplomat type upper but I might start with a 7" RRA uper instead and roll with that and slowly convert it over to the Diplomat look. A benifit for me is the office that processes the forms is located in the same city as me. That takes a couple days out of the mix. Forgive any of my typing errors to miller lite.

Pof

robino,
Your right POF is on it when it comes to the piston AR. As some of you know I have 2 full size uppers (16") ok one blongs to the wife, and now the 9.25" on an M-16 A1. I have had that lower for 8 yrs now. The thing sprays 55 fmj's like none other but after about 100M not too good. You can make hits all day long out to 300M but not sure what it would do. Frangibles are the way to go if you are going to do the shorty AR. The cool thing is my A1 lower is a registered already as a machinegun ( yes has the happy switch) so no need for SBR tax. You can register any lower as an SBR, once that is done get the POF upper. I also would go with a pistol cal upper. They are a little more pratical than the 5.56 upper IMO. I say that because of ammo price and that the 10" squeezes more out of the 9,40, and 45 making better stopping power. The 5.56 was intended to fragment at around 2700 fps +, out of a 7 to 11" barel you are far from that mark so your round is either punching through or not going in enough. The frangible rounds are made to break up so they don't cause colateral damage. With the pistol AR SBR you put the 147 9mm +P, 185 40 +P (not sure on that one), or the 200 or 230 45acp +P (this one rocks) and you now have increased the stopping power of the round not decreased it and it is cheaper to shoot.

actually, 2300 fps. is all that's needed for the typical 55 gr. .223 to fragment
with a 7" barrel, 2300 fps is obtained UP to 15 yards...basically making the 7" AR shorty a room gun.

a 9-10" barrel will be good for about 30 yrds.

an 11.5" barrel is good up to 40-50 yrds. a .223 will fragment within the 50 yard mark out of a 11.5" barrel.

a 14.5" barrel is good to 100 yrds. maybe a bit more, but not much...

without fragmenting, the .223 will poke a hole through, at BEST, yowing as it travels through, not doing a LOT of damage in the process as reported by many contractors in Afghan/Iraq (many of which use shorter barreled weapons).

I would say, in order to have at least a CQB gun...good for 50 yrds or less and effective at those ranges, you would need a 11.5" barrel at minimum.

That's lots of good data, especially if you're limiting yourself to mil-spec ammo. Luckily I'm a civilian with access to lots of ammo and a reloading press, so I'll be feeding my 7.5" AR with Hornady V-Max, which will open up if you breathe on them wrong. I should get fragmentation even down to 1500 fps and below.

I posted this elsewhere but here is my AR and XD45 together in my Pelican 1700 case. I just got this 2 days ago and am super impressed with the quality! Definitely worth the money!
