A pistol grip is OK as long as the magazine is "fixed". There are some "ugly" but functional ways of using detachable magazines. You just need to decide what you want, how you want to use it before you start and stick to it, or take your chances. If you plan to keep it and not just keep it in a safe there are particular pieces that will keep you within "the letter of the law. The spirit of the law is a very slippery slope.
