pistol caliber upper mechanics

one of my long term goals for involving an AR is to build a 40sw carbine.

My question is do pistol caliber use the same gas operated rotating breach as the rifle uppers use, or do they generally run a simple blowback design?

I am wavering between 300blk and 6.8spc2 build at the moment. If I could potentially reuse the bolt on a 40sw (same rim diameter) that would push me over the edge into getting the 6.8

Most are blow back systems. I have been thinking a DI 10mm would be nice and you could use the 6.8 bolt.

Mine is a 40 S&W that uses glock mags. I have not shot it yet since I am still waiting on a bolt.
