Why an AR-15?

This is a discussion on Why an AR-15? within the AR Talk forums, part of the Long Gun Talk category; A legit question, but my take is this... I my opinion, it is far more likely that I (or any of you) will be involved ...

A legit question, but my take is this...

I my opinion, it is far more likely that I (or any of you) will be involved in a situation where a major disaster occurs that causes a lack of basic needs - I.e., lets say there is another 9-11 type attack, but its a dam that blows up or something...regardless, something bad happens causing power outages, shortage of food for multiple days/weeks and there becomes a looting problem in my neighborhood...

My guess is, if I can have an ar to defend against looters - with a high cap mag, I have a greater chance of defending my home and family from a reasonable distance and against multiple attackers...

It is not easy to hit moving targets or targets at any distance with pistols and revolvers...with a semiautomatic rifle in hand, you can effectively suppress a lot of riffraff with much greater success.

Sure, there's guys who will make the argument against corrupt govt and foreign invaders - all valid points and not impossible by any means, but also not probable in my view and far less likely to happen.

Lawful folks should have the right.

It is NOT an ASSAULT rifle. It is a semi-automatic rifle that kinda' LOOKS like an ASSAULT rifle.

I'm not really into rifles that much, (I prefer handguns) and I have enough other rifles, semi-automatic, and bolt action, that I don't feel like I need one.

But that does not change my support for those guys that WANT an AR-15, and the high capacity magazines to feed them?

NEVER !

Let's not back down. Let's stick together. Together we can win.

Yes, this too. Could not have said it better. Bravo.

Hunting fast moving, multiple targets like predators, hogs, etc. are good choices for AR work. Target and sport shooting are AR work. However, Ben Shapiro puts it best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJdhAm_oUUs

I tried the platform... twice.

I've gone back to shotguns. I enjoy them more, they're easier to clean, and more versatile.

I need one because they're obviously meant to spray bullets from high capacity clips at "100 bullets per minute" to kill lots and lots of people. They're just plain outrageous and ridiculous (Piers Morgan British Accent)....

But seriously, I feel that my ownership of an AR15, or anything for that matter fits along with this ethos, borrowed from AwPhuch:

Quote:
"Need" is never a metric used to determine the exercise of a right.

"Need", in this regard, is an artificial value judgment imposed by one person on another. In other words: Tyranny.

You do not get to determine what I need any more than I get to determine what you need. The list of items we possess, and actions we indulge in, that are "un-needed" and potentially (or even demonstrably) dangerous is endless.

A freedom to choose things outside of our "needs" is what it means to have self-determination and freedom. Unless someone's exercise of that choice directly infringes on another's freedom it should not be a consideration of the State or any other person what that choice may be.

"Need" is not the justification I must make to live my life
